Vermillion Posted December 18 Author Posted December 18 between the national security conservatives and the free market conservatives, I'm not a lawyer, but from the ones I'm tracking this is a tossup. then again, all of them ruling for the ban to be affirmed wouldn't surprise me either
Vermillion Posted December 18 Author Posted December 18 Also haven't seen any proof behind claims from a lot of progressives that the impetus for this law only happened because of a change in their Palestine algorithm. I don't doubt it for a second but I doubt we'll ever get the research behind it if it is true.

TikTok, despite its addictive nature, is a secondary income for millions of average American citizens and contributed $24 billion+ to the GDP in 2023 alone. Over 7 million small to medium sized businesses would lose billions in combined revenue if they banned TikTok. Not to mention the violation of our first amendment rights. They want the app banned because it's a new source the gov can't control and allows millions of ppl around the world to assemble around a common cause. You have to be completely unaware of what TikTok is to be wishing for a ban. 1 7
JustHoran Posted December 18 Posted December 18 They will do whatever Trump says, so it's not getting banned.

Princess Aurora Posted December 18 Posted December 18 It's not getting banned because it's good for his propaganda 1 1

You should consider this, @Vermillion , I mean, if you're thinking whether the ban will happen or not. For example, they tried to ban Instagram in Turkiye, but had to reverse the decision because it's so important to small businesses there.
Tcharm Posted Wednesday at 08:24 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:24 PM I make money on tiktok now so... godwilling those corrupt Trump loving appointed judges will do right by the American people for once.
St. Charles Posted Wednesday at 08:47 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:47 PM There's actually a chance they might uphold the ban... The SCOTUS is pretty conservative but this also seems to be a bipartisan thing.

Its also spyware so I dont care honestly. There is nothing good about it.

But you know what is making people illiterate? No Child Left Behind, the declining budget of public education, etc. it's been something that's been brewing since the reagan administration. To blame an app for illiteracy is insane, very simple minded Facebook, and especially Twitter (since Elon) have spreaded way more far right propaganda than TikTok 1 1

Forestboy Posted Wednesday at 11:04 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:04 PM Good it's too much of a brain rot.
Rep2000 Posted Thursday at 12:21 AM Posted Thursday at 12:21 AM Frankly, this platform needs to die as well, since the brainrot effect is way too destructive on society. And let's not act like it's a free speech, "uniting common cause" platform when Nazis are using it to influence European politics, while being visually queer can get your acc suspended without an explanation.

Obviously, the largest social media app on the planet with 70 million users will have its fair share of uncles and ring wing conspiracists. News flash: they exist outside of TikTok too. "The app" is also the reason why awareness of Palestine finally broke mainstream, why Starbucks lost millions in revenue because of the TikTok-driven union protests, and the list goes on. Regardless, even if you personally haven't extracted any use out of the app, you should at the very least understand that millions of other people do and that the government should not be able to strip millions of Americans of their first amendment rights, their ability to assemble around a common cause, and take away their income. It's objectively unconstitutional and should terrify you. If this ban goes through, it will set a precedent of over-reaching government censorship and on top of that we will lose a platform that has given millions of us a collective voice that has finally allowed us to push back against the oppression and censorship of the exploitative corporate-government partnership that is actively ******* us. Eric. Posted Saturday at 05:17 AM Posted Saturday at 05:17 AM TikTok's argument is kind of lousy. Not sure how they can prove their platform is so special it allows users to express viewpoints that other platforms limit/restrict, which could be a significant First Amendment defense. I'm open to being convinced otherwise. The US is also going on a protectionist bent, so I would not be surprised if the ban is upheld. One has to wonder what's in those classified docs the DOJ filed with the DC Circuit. I definitely feel bad for the millions of people who would be affected by this and it's kind of grating this ban would further entrench the Alphabet+Meta duopoly that TikTok had easily overcome.
