TRF. Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 #50. Molina When You Wake Up Genre: Dream Pop, Neo-Psychedelia Ambient Pop, Indietronica, Slowcore, Ethereal Wave From: Copenhagen, Denmark || Label: Escho If you know Molina at all, it's likely you do from her synth-heavy single "Hey Kids", which went viral on TikTok and still being used on that site to this day. But if that's what you're looking for on her debut album When You Wake Up, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. Instead what you have is something more experimental relatively-speaking, noisy guitars that contrast wonderfully with the Chilean-Danish's artist sweet-sounding voice, that sounds close to "shoegaze", but isn't quite that. Synths/electronics are present, yes, but feel rather abstract compared to any 80's worshipping around. Written during her pregnancy, it's not necessarily a record about motherhood, but the concept of "new beginnings" seem to be present, if not on the lyrics, then at least on her change of sound, a very welcome one certainly. Highlights: "Navel", "Scorpio", "I Am Your House", "The Valleys of Tomé", "Organs" (feat. ML Buch) RIYL: Stereolab, ML Buch, A.R. Kane #49. Tyla Tyla Genre: Afropiano Contemporary R&B, Dance-Pop From: Johannesburg, South Africa || Label: Epic One of the brightest stars of this 2024 was South African singer Tyla and deservingly so, but her debut self-titled album was a bit more of a slow burner for me than something that hit immediately. While there are plenty of great tracks that borrow influence from South African amapiano into a context of global pop music, going back and relistening to the record, basically almost every hook on the record was immediately memorable for me. Sonically this album doesn't deviate far from its hit "Water", but it also makes for a super consistent release, Tyla's voice and personality really shines through every track (especially those on the deluxe edition!). It'll certainly be exciting to see her only grow further from here, because again, it'd be very much deserved. Highlights: "Shake Ah" (feat. Tony Duardo, optimist, Maestro Fresh Wes), "Push 2 Start", "Safer", "Water", "No.1" (feat. Tems), "Breathe Me", "On and On", "Jump" (feat. Skilibeng & Gunna), "To Last" RIYL: Simmy, Tems, Music of the Sun-era Rihanna #48. Carme López Quintela Genre: Drone, Electroacoustic Avant-Folk, Post-Minimalism, Galician Folk Music From: O Incio, Spain || Label: Warm Winters Ltd. As someone whose European background is mostly Galician, I am more than familiar with the bagpipe, and Galician sound artist Carme Lopez's take on the instrument on her debut album Quintela is one of the most interesting ones I've heard in recent times. While its intro and outro seem to take a relatively accessible approach to it, akin to the most traditional forms of folk music from Galicia and other Celtic/Celtic-adjacent regions, the usage of bagpipes on the majority of the record seems to add texture to really intense, heavy droning sounds, that are almost amusical at times. While bagpipes might have oddly earned a bit of a divisive reputation, Carme's work on Quintela feels like a very much contemporary approach to it, definitely breaking tradition, but still honoring her roots. Highlights: "Prologue: Cando a pena me mata, a alegría dame alento", "II: MATICOLO. Aos cans da casa: Piri, sil, duma e mouri", "IV: CACHELOS. A césar de farbán" RIYL: Kali Malone, Eliane Radigue, Brìghde Chaimbeul #47. Hakushi Hasegawa Mahōgakkō Genre: Art Pop, Glitch Pop Nu Jazz, Deconstructed Club, Folktronica, Progressive Pop, Hardcore EDM, Neo-Psychedelia From: Tokyo, Japan || Label: Brainfeeder Tokyo-based singer/songwriter and producer Hakushi Hasegawa has been creating their own "brand" of avant-garde music for a while now, but for their debut album under Brainfeeder Records, they decided to go all in. Mahōgakkō is a record that can sound very overwhelming, at its most, it feels as if one opened 15 YouTube tabs at the same time, one playing a recording of a jazz orchestra, one a catchy J-pop song, other a very fast-paced hardcore club track, and the rest of random audio effects and abrasive noise that can hit your ear at any moment. But while there are moments are little more acoustic, a little more conventionally "beautitful", it's in that chaos in which the record shines the brightest, it's frenetic and dense, and in all of its weirdness, still pop. Highlights: "Departed", "Gone" (feat. Kid Fresino), "Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)", "Repeal (Tekkai)" "Enbami", "KYŌFUNOHOSHI", "Outside (Soto)" RIYL: Katie Gately, MON/KU, Clarence Clarity #46. Dillom Por cesárea Genre: Experimental Hip Hop Horrorcore, Alternative Rock, Abstract Hip Hop, Industrial Hip Hop, Trip Hop From: Buenos Aires, Argentina || Label: Bohemian Groove If I'm being honest, my first impression of Argentinian rapper/singer Dillom was that he was a bit unserious, at least in comparison to some of his contemporaries. But beginning on Post Mortem, his debut album, he started showing different facets of artistry that on his sophomore Por cesárea he delves fully deeper into. It's not by any means an easy listen, while a rap album overall the presence of different subgenres of rock music is still heavy, and the topics he touches on even moreso. Drug abuse, parental neglect, ideation, and even though it has a "happy" ending, it's surely A Lot. And yet, even at its most intense moments, there is a touch of humour that feels very characteristic of him, and of us as Argentinians that I find myself very reflected on. Highlights: "Últimamente", "La carie" (feat. Lali), "Buenos tiempos", "Muñecas", "(Irreversible)", "Reiki y yoga", "Ciudad de la paz" RIYL: an ethically sourced Slowthai, Ill Quentin, Atrocity Exhibition-era Danny Brown #45. KMRU Natur Genre: Drone, Noise, Ambient Field Recordings, Musique concrète, Dark Ambient From: Nairobi, Kenya || Label: Touch The works that introduced me to the music of Kenyan musician KMRU used field recordings in a way that almost felt nostalgic, through ambient music that sounded ethereal, like a distant memory of when you were growing up as a kid, or being around nature. Now having recently moved to Berlin, you can hear how that has had some influence on his music through his new album Natur. It does use field recordings, but the way they are layered over the much denser, noisy instrumentals, makes everything sound way more intense, a bit claustrophobic even, while still somehow being able to drift away and lose yourself into the music. A 52-minute-long piece separated into five parts, Natur is probably the noisiest (solo) record KMRU has released to date, one of his best too. Highlights: it's just one track technically RIYL: Fennesz, Yellow Swans, Aho Ssan #44. Mount Eerie Night Palace Genre: Avant-Folk, Post-Rock, Slacker Rock Indie Folk, Noise Rock, Drone, Field Recordings, Spoken Word, Noise From: Anacortes, USA || Label: P.W. Elverum & Sun After having released some of the most emotionally intense and brutal records of the past decade, Phil Elverum's most recent album as Mount Eerie, Night Palace, feels like a bit of a change of pace. Now, just like any other Phil Elverum record, particularly post-2017, it's certainly not a comfortable listen, especially since it's a behemoth of a record, but I can see myself returning to it often, even growing onto becoming my favorite Elverum project eventually. Perhaps because of it's oddball tracklist (see: "Swallowed Alive"), perhaps due to its slight darkly humorous tint, perhaps due to the fact that despite its very experimental nature it still manages to find time to pull on your heartstrings a little bit anyway. But whatever it is that makes Night Palace work for me, I'm glad it does. Highlights: "Night Palace", "Huge Fire", "Swallowed Alive", "Broom of Wind", "I Walk", "Empty Paper Towel Roll", "Wind & Fog Pt. 2", "I Heard Whales (I Think)", "I Saw Another Bird", "I Spoke WIth A Fish", "Non-Metaphorical Decolonization", "November Rain", "& Sun", "Stone Woman Gives Birth to a Child at Night", "I Need New Eyes" RIYL: The Microphones, Tim Buckley, Godspeed You! Black Emperor #43. FLO Access All Areas Genre: Contemporary R&B, Pop Dance-Pop, Trap Soul, Smooth Soul From: London, UK || Label: Island A couple years ago, London-based girl group FLO became decently viral with their song "Cardboard Box". Reminiscent of peak Y2K girl groups on both sides of the Atlantic like Destiny's Child or the Sugababes, they only ever became more popular, garnering a large fanbase over the years. Except it was a little more complicated than that, and their debut album Access All Areas clears that up. While addressing their rise to fame and the hurdles they've experienced, it's also a record full of beautiful R&B and pop songs that rely on nostalgia just the right amount, with harmonies and hooks that are pure ear-candy to those who can appreciate it, and with immaculate production all the way through. If anything, the trio already have the energy of experienced veterans, of people who know they're stars. Highlights: "AAA", "Walk Like This", "Check", "On & On", "IWH2BMX", "Nocturnal", "Shoulda Woulda Coulda", "Get It Til I'm Gone", "I'm Just a Girl" RIYL: Chloe x Halle, Sugababes, Brandy #42. Loidis One Day Genre: Microhouse, Dub Techno Rominimal, Tech House, Outsider House From: Emporia, USA || Label: Incienso Brian Leeds, better known as Huerco S., has become a prominent figure in experimental electronic music over the last decade. The Kansas-born producer gained recognition in the early 2010s for his outsider house style, characterized by lo-fi and experimental elements. However, his versatility led him to explore diverse paths, through projects like Pendant and PDP III he delved into dark ambient sounds, while with Loidis showcased his more danceable side. One Day, his debut album as Loidis, is clearly a techno and house album, but several tracks also use a lo-fi aesthetic, a bit of a departure from the basics of mainstream tech-house. While the tracks, which can stretch for quite a remarkable length, can be repetitive and minimalistic, they never feel tiresome, and you can always find something to latch onto that feels hypnotizing. Highlights: "Tell Me", "Wait & See", "Love's Lineaments", "Dollarama", "Why Do" RIYL: Basic Channel, Petre Inspirescu, Kenny Larkin #41. Crizin da Z.O. Acelero Genre: Funk brasileiro, Industrial Hip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop Tamborzão, Deconstructed Club, Hard Drum, Conscious Hip Hop, Political Hip Hop, Batucada, Industrial Techno, Glitch Hop From: Curitiba, Brazil || Label: QTV The take on Brazilian funk that Curitiba-based group Crizin da Z.O. develops is far from conventional - you can hear influences from different subgenres of hip hop, of industrial and experimental club music, even a non-insignificant presence of metal and punk rock. And yet on Acelero, their most recent album, it all feels genuine, and while its lyrics touch a lot on Brazil's politics, in its past, present and future, it's still tied to the music feeling like a love letter to the genre in all of its glory and weirdness. Released through QTV, one of the coolest labels around, in a moment where the genre is becoming more gentrified than ever, it's cool to see that Brazilian artists will still be far ahead of everyone else in this game. Highlights: "O fim um" (feat. Iggor Calavera), "Calmo a pesar de tudo" (feat. Saskia), "Demônio do Rio da Prata", "Festa da carne", "Território", "Simulado", "Acelerado" RIYL: Tantao e os Fita, Linn Da Quebrada, Injury Reserve
TRF. Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 #40. sunlid no mires atrás Genre: Indie Pop, Shoegaze Dream Pop, Twee Pop, Power Pop, Noise Pop From: Buenos Aires, Argentina || Label: 1/4 At this moment, the current sound of underground Argentinian rock music is very much marked by shoegaze. To the point where it's very difficult for many bands and artists to stand out if pretty much everyone is doing the same thing or working in the same subgenre. But Buenos Aires band sunlid have it figured out: having solid songwriting, memorable melodies and a really good vocalist that is good at transmitting emotions. Which, yeah, of course, basic, but beyond the reverb and the distortion, what makes their debut album no mires atrás so remarkable is the potent strength of their songs, which sound like a perfect, sunny spring day in a beautiful city. And if nothing else, it's good for filling that Alvvays-shaped hole you get when they take their breaks from releasing music! Highlights: "Ya nada es igual", "Caminar en la luna", "Hablar de vos", "Respirar", "Será de mí" RIYL: Alvvays, Las Ligas Menores, Drop Nineteens #39. Judeline Bodhiria Genre: Alt-Pop, Alternative R&B Flamenco Pop, Art Pop, Funk 150 bpm From: Jerez de la Frontera, Spain || Label: Interscope 21-year-old Spanish singer Judeline has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, a pop artist with a lot of potential, and on her debut album BODHIRIA she makes sure to demonstrate that. Inspired by her Venezuelan and Andalusian roots, it has a bunch of bangers influenced by joropo, reggaetón and baile funk, as well as different palos of flamenco, but also more introspective moments led by more atmospheric, yet immaculate-sounding production which allow her vocal talent and songwriting chops to be display more effectively. While undoubtedly pop and bound to reach a massive audience sooner-than-later, it still feels far from anything generic, and in the current landscape of Spanish-language pop music, Judeline feels like a breath of fresh air, with one of the strongest pop debut records of the year. Highlights: "bodhitale", "mangata", "BRUJERIA!", "luna roja", "JOROPA", "4 angelitos", "Heavenly" (feat. Rusowsky), "zarcillos de plata" RIYL: Rosalía, Ralphie Choo, Caprisongs-era FKA twigs #38. Hoplites Paramainomeni Genre: Progressive Metal, Avant-Garde Metal, Dissonant Black Metal Technical Thrash Metal, Mathcore, Brutal Prog, Dissonant Death Metal From: Ningbo, China || Label: self-released While I wouldn't consider myself a metalhead, there is at least one metal album per year that I form an inexplicable bond to. This year's turn was that of Hoplites, a solo project by Chinese artist Liu Zhenyang focused in Greek mythology, and his most recent (and possibly last?) album Paramainomeni. Maybe it's because it was released right at the beginning of the year and it allowed me to revisit it often, maybe it's because it incorporates elements from other genres in a very creative way, like that of the most experimental corners of prog and jazz into his work. But the simple reason might be because it rules, the constant mechanical-sounding drums, the riffs, the way it can go into several unexpected places in just one track, the overall energy, it's just great stuff. Highlights: "Μῆνιν ἄειδε, θεὰ παραμαινομένη ἐμοῦ...", "Παραδειγματιζομένη μουσική", " Συμμαινόμεναι Διονύσῳ Ἐλευθέριῳ", "Ἄπαυστα θεία μανία" RIYL: Imperial Triumphant, Thantifaxath, Naked City #37. Polo Perks <3 <3 <3, AyooLii & FearDorian A Dog's Chance Genre: Lowend Jerk, Emo Rap, Cloud Rap From: New York/Milwaukee, USA || Label: self-released One rap project I found myself returning to over and over again was A Dog's Chance, a joint album from New York rapper Polo Perks <3 <3 <3, Kenya-born, Milwaukee-based AyooLii and rapper/producer FearDorian. They all have their own style and personality, and on the tracks the three of them are together they still manage to complement each other very well. However, if there's one thing that this record is characterized by is its wild use of sampling. While most tracks follow a very simple formula (somewhat recognizable indie-adjacent song sped up + fast hi hats and a rattling bass characteristic of jerk/lowend beats), none of it feels particularly gimmicky, they're just really well done and feels like a lot of genuine fun to listen to over and over again. Highlights: "Rainbow", "Skatepark (Shout Out AyooLii)", "Tony Snell", "Rockband Tees 08 Denim", "Pinky", "PaperPlanesSoulja", "BREESHWRLD", "Carissa's Weird", "Benice2me" RIYL: J.P., xaviersobased, RealYungPhil #36. Cindy Lee Diamond Jubilee Genre: Hypnagogic Pop, Psychedelic Pop, Indie Rock Noise Pop, Slacker Rock, Brill Building, Dream Pop, Alt-Country From: Vancouver, Canada || Label: Realistik Studios One of the biggest success stories of 2024 was that of Cindy Lee, the band of Pat Flegel, Vancouver-based artist and former Women member that released plenty of great lo-fi, psychedelic records for about a decade, yet finally broke through with Diamond Jubilee. Even though it was a notably more hi-fi affair than the band's previous project, this album was exclusively available on a GeoCities page, 32-tracks, over two-hours long. Not the most accessible by any means, and yet it was undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed and beloved projects of the year, and deservingly so. The influences of Motown and early rock'n'roll that characterized their music is pushed to the forefront with still plenty of space left for experimentation, and despite how intimidating its length can be, it's a ride to lose yourself in. Highlights: "Diamond Jubilee", "Glitz", "All I Want Is You", "Dallas", "Always Dreaming", "Flesh and Blood", "Til Polarity's End", "Realistik Heaven", "Gayblevision", "Dracula", "Lockstepp", "If You Hear Me Crying", "Darling of the Diskotheque", "What's It Going to Take", "24/7 Heaven" RIYL: the idea of Ariel Pink ever being capable of making a consistently good album #35. Kali Uchis Orquídeas Genre: Latin Pop, Contemporary R&B Dance-Pop, Afropiano, Reggaetón, Soul, Alternative R&B From: Pereira, Colombia/Alexandria, USA || Label: Geffen Released right at the beginning of the year, Kali Uchis' fourth album Orquídeas sounds exactly like the way summer feels, which is why it was at the right moment for someone like me living in the Southern hemisphere. Mostly singing in Spanish, in this record she embraces upbeat latin pop music that is hot right now, like reggaetón or dembow, and she is certainly good at it, but she is also able to translate the soul and R&B influences of her primarly-English-language work into this record, involving influences of boleros or merengue as well. And even at its most "generic", instrumentals still feel very detailed and meticulous as far production goes, all tied together by her emotionally open lyrics and smooth voice, into what might be her best album to date. Highlights: "¿Como así?", "Me pongo loca", "Igual que un ángel" (feat. Peso Pluma), "Pensamientos intrusivos", "Te mata", "Young Rich and In Love", "Muñekita" (feat. El Alfa & JT), "Dame beso // Muevete" RIYL: Shakira, Tyla, Rauw Alejandro #34. Milan W Leave Another Day Genre: Neo-Psychedelia, Dream Pop, Ambient Pop Hypnagogic Pop, Ethereal Wave, Minimal Wave From: Antwerp, Belgium || Label: Stroom Leave Another Day by Milan W. wasn't something that hit immediately, but once I revisited a couple of weeks after to see what I had missed, did feel very special. While he started out making beat-driven, mostly instrumental electronic music, that style is barely present on this record, instead favoring conventional singer-songwriter kind of stuff. Conventional being something relative of course, being released on the label STROOM initially known for their behemoth of the Voice Actor album a couple years back, it feels somewhat stylistically tied to it as well. It's beautiful and relatively accessible, with bright-sounding hooks and heartfelt lyrics, and yet it still feels a bit haunted, the uncanny instrumental tracks spread throughout the tracklist, the overall atmosphere of it, it adds a layer to it that in turn contributes to its quality. Highlights: "I Wait", "All the Way", "Face to Face", "Days in My Arms", "Ballad", "Blue Heron", "Wrong One", "Leave Another Day" RIYL: A.R. Kane, Dean Blunt's most accessible projects, Voice Actor #33. Amaro Freitas Y'Y Genre: Third Stream, Post-Minimalism, Avant-Garde Jazz Spiritual Jazz, Post-Bop, New Age From: Recife, Brazil || Label: Psychic Hotline Over several years, Amaro Freitas, a pianist from Recife, Brazil, developed his own form of jazz inspired by his African roots and Afro-Brazilian culture in general. Amaro's newest album Y'Y continues to pay to homage to that in addition to Indigenous cultures from the Amazon, the record's title being a reference to the Satére-Mawé term for "water", exploring a connection with nature that extends beyond any form of colonial exploitation. That's heard in its constant usage of field recordings, unconventional percussion that sometimes feels like water drops hitting your head and the influences from Brazilian music that permeate the record. Featuring contributors from all over the world, like Brandee Younger, Shabaka Hutchins or Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker, Y'Y represents a true breakthrough for Amaro, one of the most gorgeous jazz records of the year. Highlights: "Uiara (Encantada da água) - Vida e cura", "Dança dos martelos", "Y'Y", "Mar de Cirandeiras" (feat. Jeff Parker), "Encantados" (feat. Hamid Drake, Shabaka Hutchings, Aniel Someillan) RIYL: Pharoah Sanders, Bill Dixon, Hermeto Pascoal #32. Adult Jazz So Sorry, So Slow Genre: Art Pop, Experimental, Chamber Music Post-Minimalism, Chamber Jazz, Post-Rock, Electronic From: Leeds, UK || Label: Spare Thought British band Adult Jazz debuted in the mid-2010s with music that fused rock instrumentation with the most theatrical, complex pop possible, eerie-sounding electronics and cryptic lyrics. The band's eight years of seeming inactivity led me to think their time was over, but Adult Jazz returned this year with their third record, So Sorry So Slow, expanding on the unpredictable sound they developed throughout their career, delivering on the promise of their earlier works. Featuring contributions from Owen Pallett and Oliver Coates, the record can easily go from tense, minimalist, experimental music to massive-sounding hooks, marked by strings, ambiance and band member Harry Burgess' distinctive vocals/lyricism. While still keeping the band's characteristic weirdness, and even going further with it at times, So Sorry So Slow is their most fully realized album yet. Highlights: "Bleat Melisma", "Suffer One", "No Relief", "Marquee", "Dusk Song", "Earth of Worms", "No Sentry", "I Was Surprised" RIYL: Meredith Monk, Perfume Genius, Julia Holter #31. Erika de Casier Still Genre: Contemporary R&B Alternative R&B, Hip Hop Soul, Downtempo, Ambient Pop From: Portugal/Copenhagen, Denmark || Label: 4AD Since releasing her breakout debut album Essentials in 2019, Portuguese-Danish artist Erika de Casier has built both a large following as well a sound of her own, her own space in the revival of late 90's and Y2K-adjacent revival of pop and R&B. Her third album Still, her second released under 4AD, is her first with features, including contributions from artists like They Hate Change, Shygirl, and Blood Orange, and it does feel like a more accessible version of the work she'd been putting out before. However, it also does expand enough on it, including live instrumentation on a number of tracks, and lyrically exploring usual themes of love and relationships in a very stream-of-consciousness kind of way. Even with her growing popularity, Still remains a testament to Erika De Casier's personal artistic vision. Highlights: "Home Alone", "Lucky", "The Princess", "Ice" (feat. They Hate Change), "Ooh", "Ex-Girlfriend" (feat. Shygirl), "Toxic", "Twice" (feat. Blood Orange) RIYL: The Velvet Rope-era Janet, Brandy, Gaelle

TRF. Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 Well I can't really be bothered to keep updating much so I'll just post my full top 50 my AOTY: #1. Charli XCX - BRAT What more can be said about this record? BRAT has probably been the most discussed album of the year, one of the most over-exposed too, perhaps only second to The Tortured Poets Department. The memes, the "brat summer" thing, the "kamala IS brat" tweet, the endless discourse about the record's lyrics, about its content, about (mostly sales-based) comparisons with other artists, about how this record breaking through Says A Lot About Society. I can understand how many would just want to put this behind. It's overwhelming even for me. But ultimately, does all of this affect in any way how I feel about the music? ...not really, no. The truth is, even though I have thought about placing every record on, say, the top 8 as my AOTY at one point or another, ultimately, I feel like picking anything else other than BRAT would've been a lie. And not just because it is by far my most played release of the year, but also because it does encapsulate everything 2024 has been, for better or worse. Basically every track is a banger (even the ones I'm a bit iffy about): A.G. Cook, El Guincho, George Daniel, EASYFUN and everyone else co-producing this record brought their A-game into it, and while the 365 Party Girl, the post-indie-sleaze club-pop sound is what BRAT is known for (and is not an insignificant part of it), when this record really shines through lyrically is when Charli opens up about her insecurities, about being a woman in the music industry, about her regrets and uncertainties. The approach of her songwriting feels like she's just texting you what she's been going through, and feels refreshing in that it doesn't sacrifice interesting music for honest lyrics. While for me the top 2 Charli releases remain Pop 2 and True Romance (and in that order too!), BRAT is the perfect representation of what 2024 has been like, at least for me, in the form of pop music. A lot to take in, sometimes unbearable, but when it's been good, it can feel like the greatest thing ever. And for what it's worth, I'd rather stay with the good.
