Ok so im off work! Which means for a few days at least, there will be regular updates. I dont want this to stretch out too long since I dont have graphics to make it worth the wait so without further ado...

Round Three

Songs I Discovered

Do You Miss Me at All- Bridgit Mendler (2016)

Ahhh yes everyone's favorite former Disney star turned entrepreneur and genius. This song is wayyyy funkier than I ever expected even from the part that went viral on social media. I wasnt familiar with Miss Mendler's game. I do wonder how she must feel now that she lives such a different life now from when she recorded this song.

Izzo (H.O.V.A)- Jay-Z (2001)

My journey to loosening up about rap/hip-hop music is akin to me embracing myself as a person and one album that was essential to the musical breakthrough I had this year was Jay's The Blueprint. He's so effortlessly cool, so smooth like a Prince or a Luther yet he retains so much of the grit of his era of music. Izzo was the clear highlight for me- a great set of verses and a catchy pop-leaning chorus sampling one of the greatest Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 songs of all time is a win all around and whats more, I found myself replaying the whole album again each time the song came on. If this isnt a sign to the power of music I dont really know what is.

Try Me... I Know We Can Make It- Donna Summer (1975)

17 straight minutes of Donna being the greatest pop girl of her time and one of the greatest artists in history. She and Luther are high on my list of discography dives for next year and its like every day I found a new one from her. Shoutout to my friend for sending this in the gc- he has the best taste.

No One Can Love You More- Phyllis Hyman (1977)

What a voice. The same friend that sent me the Donna song would be the same one who recommended this 70s classic and I have been floored since. This is why I will never see it for people who say they have nothing to listen to- we live in an age where music of the past is more accessible than ever and not enough ppl seem to take advantage of that.

Hand on Your Heart- Kylie Minogue (1989)

One of my absolute favorite things on the forums is discovering new music through suggestions, the Music tab, or through megarates hosted in the Base. This year Kylie Minogue finally got me. I had been familiar with some of her work before- 2001's Light Years is a good album last time I heard it and all her albums since 2018's Golden have all been thoroughly played in this household. Yet her 80s and 90s work eluded me (i simply didn't have the motivation or time) until this year when iconic ATRLer Saddy began hosting the OG pop girl rates. On each of the first 3 albums, a huge bop was what introduced the album and Hand on your Heart was one of them. I can see why this took off when it came out too- a strong, catchy chorus, a breezy verse and a vocal performance that invites you to sing along  to your hearts content. It was already solid when I first heard it, and now its already one of my most played songs of the year.

Any Love- Luther Vandross (1988)

His documentary can't come sooner tbh. More and more as I meet more people and get into legendary catalogs I am constantly drawn to Luther's life and music. In a clip promoting the documentary, a person who worked with Luther said something along the lines of 'you can know all you want to know about who Luther was through his song 'Any Love'' and immediately I made a connection to the song. I really cant wait until I get into more of his work- and this isnt the only song of his to make the list this year.

30. Weird- KAYTRANADA and Durand Bernarr

Having friends with taste really is a blessing because I would have gone through this year without discovering this producer nor this amazing song. I'll save my praise for Kaytranada for a later post... which means I get to write a paragraph on Durand! Ok no I wont do that but I really, really do recommend anyone who loves vocals to get into Durand. He's easily among the very best singers of this generation and he displays nearly all of his skills on this electro-R&B jam. He snarls at the person he is talking about (which considering he wrote this, it could very well be based on a real person), his voice switching from sassy confrontation to rippling runs as he relays again and again to them to just back off. His ability to yo-yo from his bass to a screeching tenor in the same line blows me away and with all that technical prowess (he's even better live) what is more important to me is how much fun he seems to be having just singing his face off.

29. Birds of a Feather- Billie Eilish

Underwhelming video aside, Billie might have really dropped the song that would go on to do the best numbers ever in her career so far. Its not even hard to see why this song has show such staying power and likely will continue into next year as if its brand new. The melody is simple, the lyrics are heartfelt and while they arent complex or subtly darker like a lot of Billie's songs, they hit a deep enough cord that people can still feel strongly with it and it not be corny. Honestly its a crime this hasnt gone number one yet but regardless, Billie continues to be the defining artist of her generation and its not even close.

28. Tyrant- Beyonce (w/ Dolly Parton)

You guys are going to have to get used to seeing this album cover on this list.

The violins really sell this song for me. They twinkle with the same sexuality that Beyonce does, bouncing on her vocal lines effortlessly. I have spent this whole year trying to fully understand the lyrical, thematic and ancestral significant around this album- and on the same hand I've been trying to weed out what songs are my favorite. Tyrant was one I initially was confused about- how country was this? But then I realized what I should have already known: this was as country as any song and at the same time it was a BEYONCE song. it both fell under a genre and didnt need to cause of the creator herself.

27. Lonely Dancers- Conan Gray

I really think this song could have and should have ruled pop radio this year. I love how yearning the lyrics are and yet, as with many songs on this album and on radio today, perfectly wrapped with bouncy, pop-rock influences of a bygone era. I sing along to this evertime it comes on and frankly, I dont think it will ever get old. You guys are gonna see Conan again on this countdown I can assure you.

26. Training Season- Dua Lipa

On one hand I can sorta kinda get why this era didn't set off the way it should have. I personally love songs like Training Season, but the sparkle from FN wasnt here for some reason and I can exactly put my finger on it why especially cause on paper, this is a great, groovy pop hit ready for radio. I love how intense Dua sounds- she really not here for games and she telling the men who come up to her be ready cause the man she needs gotta be on his game. All while she is detailing that, the sound rises and ebbs with her- steady during the verses and steadily thudding as the chorus gets closer. Deserved so much more and I will stand by that.

15. Glorious- GloRilla

I wasnt expecting to take Glo seriously when she first became known back in 2022 or something. Yet she continually stepped her game up- she booked strong collabs, appeared at countless award shows and festivals, showed us her endearing and effortless swagger in interviews and her tweets. Most importantly, her solo work was getting stronger and more distinct. Glorious is a culmination of a strong build up and a step ahead of all her other releases so far. She doesnt hid behind collabs- she leads and lets her feature have some of her shine. She showcases her lyrical versatility, isnt afraid to show her less bravado side (she still lets you know she aint playing tho) and incorporates the sounds that she as young black girl from the South grew up with. Doing all this, she never sounds inauthentic and thats really what makes this album so good to me. I cant wait to see where she goes next. Highlights: Whatchu Know Bout Me, Hollon, TGIF and Dont Deserve.

14. Sincere- Khalid

The whole outting debacle, done with malice and ill intent no doubt, turned out to be a net positive for Khalid. He had been under the radar for me for years- I hadnt heard a song from him since 2021 at the very latest and I had simply not cared enough to check this album out the week it dropped if im honest. Yet after that whole situation took over the stan world, black media and etc, I started to see clips of his music on my timelines and decided to see what his recent work was like. Sincere isnt a groundbreaking album, but it showcases the vulnerability he has always shown with somehow even more emphasis now that such a sensitive part of his personal life is now the discussion of millions. His voice is clear and sweet, and his honesty is only matched by his consistency- not one track feels out of place. It runs a little long in my opinion, but its still worth a listen and I dont regret one second for giving it a chance. Highlights: Breathe, Owe to You, Who's There to Pick Me Up and Tainted.

I love the Songs I Discovered sections, especially with the nods to much older music. From the bunch I really adored Lesley Gore's '' Misty '' and I absolutely have to dwell deeper into her discography, I really vibe with her voice!

Eternal Flame is an absolute banger, but I always thought it was by Atomic Kitten because it was their cover of the song I first heard. And... I don't know maybe it's sacrilege but I actually prefer the Atomic Kitten version just a little bit to the original.. But I have a huge soft spot and nostalgia for 2000s pop so it's kind of an unfair matchup.

If you vibed with Murder On The Dancefloor I would also suggest Take Me Home and Groovejet by Sophie Ellis-Bextor if you haven't already heard them. Sophie is kind of a treasure trove of forgotten bops...

I'm one of the people who really loved Harlequin as a whole, but I honestly didn't like Happy Mistake a lot. I think the live performance was insane though and I gained some new appreciation for the song overall. It helped that the staging and costuming for Gaga was so immaculate. Sometimes some added visual aspects do enhance the reception for the song overall.

omg thank youuu my discovered sections are always my fave cause I love when i find songs people have already loved and when i put my own taste cause im proud of it lmao. i will def check out those sophie songs because i simply cant get enough! i can always do with more 2000s euro dance pop in my playlist

Sophie Ellis-Bextor has a lot of hidden gems. I'm actually more familiar with Get Over You and Groovejet than MOTDF! At the moment her 2nd album Shoot From The Hip has been on heavy rotation for me.

Avril has really good album tracks. Same for her unreleased tracks. 3rd album and onwards you can tell she got a vocal coach so even tho her voice is more squeaky, she really does have talent. I know IWY is quite infamous for how it has 2 versions of the music video (the last few scenes are different in one of the versions).

Eternal Flame is one of the tracks I most remember from when I grew up  (I was born in '98, somehow this track stuck around until like 2005 on the radio. Haven't heard it played anywhere in forever tho).

omg those two songs recommended again? let put miss sophie on rn fr

Songs Discovered

- Murder on the Dancefloor; I laugh at how it blew up. Wish it had a Running Up the Hill moment, but it had a cute resurgence and I'm happy I got into it again. :duca:

- Violet Hill; I actually forgot about it. Today I enjoy it so much more than when it was initially released.

- I'm With You; My childhood anthem. :heart2:

- Eternal Flame; Dear lord is this a flash back.. but it's such a timeless tune. I'm glad you discovered it.

- Home; Ugh.. his voice is perfection in it. When I'm in a mood I will just cry to it.

Songs of the Year

- Von Dutch is a BOP. Deserves so much. Wish it was a smash, but it just goes off. My favourite song from the album.

- Joyride is cute, and fun. Definitely an explosive return to form.

- 16 Carriages was such a strong song lyrically and it deserved all the fame Texas Hold 'Em got. I think it's the centre of the album as a whole.

Albums of the Year

- Not gonna lie, I've seen so many people tell me I need to give a listen to FLO.. but it's so long and my attention span can't handle it. May need to dive in an listen to it in full.

- Short N Sweet was non stop for me since it released. Such a happy and not so serious pop album, she really shines.

thank you for commenting on so much i really love seeing how you guys feel about these picks

Not us both discovering a new song from Kylie's Enjoy Yourself album because of the Pre-2000s Divas rate, and it being part of our Best Of 2024 list!! :WAP:

Haven't heard of Phyllis Hyman before, but No One Can Love You More is stunning! The instrumental especially is so lush. :jonnycat:

I feel like I love half of the album AT LEAST. That's Life, That's Entertainment, Smile, The Joker and Close To You are the ultimate tracks from the album, but I do love If My Friends Could See Me Now, Folie a Deux, Oh When The Saints and World On A String as well... I feel like I appreciate the album more and more each passing day, but that could also be because I was just in my 50s and 60s type of traditional pop era, it usually strikes me during Christmas time because they really go hand in hand lmao.

At first I didn't know Close to You was a Sinatra cover because the track title is slightly different but when the beat started I actually gasped. Instant top 10 Lady Gaga tracks ever for me. I feel like she did this track for Tony. From what I know she didn't mention his name once for Harlequin's rollout which makes me go "this album is 100% in honor of Tony". I've said it a few times across the forum, I really want Lady Gaga to do a Disney covers album. At least just a cover of When You Wish Upon A Star.

More Than a Woman- Aaliyah (2001)

The second Aaliyah song on this list. I love how mature she sounds here- someone who can and was ready to stand on her own by this time. I dont have much to say but I really like the song and it was another constant revisit for me.

I Like That- Janelle Monae (2018)

I still need to give Janelle her flowers and cover her music too. I just know she has more bangers in those gorgeous looking albums. I think I might have been playing a Beyonce album- 4 or Renny- and this came on a few songs down and I was floored. Her confidence is second to none here and every part of the song is great. One of my faves of all time at this point.

I Hope You Dance- Gladys Knight (2013)

Of course I'm familiar with the original song and I still prefer it, but I also love the mini genre of soul/R&B legends covering crossover hits on their albums. Gladys injects a warm, maturing love to the lyrics, singing them with a touch only she can provide. Had this originated with her in the 70s I think it could have been one of her defining hits.

So Into You- Tamia (1998)

This song is so fun and sweet and just great. Like you really feel like you are on a summer ride, hands in the air laughing with the love of your life. Or maybe you guys are having a picnic and the warm breeze tickles your face as you guys flirt. Thats what I feel when I hear this song and I'm so confused how it eluded me for so long. All my friends knew it too so imagine my delight when I played it in the car and we were all singing our heads off down the highway.

Dont Think I'm Not- Kandi (2000)

I cant recall where I heard this the first time but I can recall how gagged I was that RHOA star KANDI was not only a real singer but made certified bops. Now dont drag- I know she began her career in music and still writes and performs to this day. But it is one thing to be aware of a fact and another to see it for yourself. What's more is that this isnt like some cute underbaked song either- Kandi is full on MPG here with a hook, cutting verses, a slick tone that never gets too wild yet is still pleasant and most importantly, its dance break material to the T.

Share Your Love with Me- Aretha Franklin (1969)

The good thing about someone like Aretha is that her catalog of hits, deep cuts and covers are so expansive, I can discover a new one of hers any moment and be reminded all over again why this woman is consistently called the greatest. Forget her range here. To create effortless background vocals that compliment each line and chorus, to play piano on your own song and match it with your soaring soprano… an artist like Aretha is very rare in the industry and I'll never stop saying that. I found myself replaying this 70s hit over and over again, just marveling at her brilliance. It doesn't help that its a good song in itself.

25. we cant be friends (wait for your love)- Ariana Grande

So when "yes, and?" dropped I was sort of split. As a song, it was good and fun and was a slightly snarky comeback at all the disses and hard press she was getting after the revelation about the current man she was with. However as lead single material I didnt feel exactly confident about its chances nor did it have mucn replay value on its own. I was so neutral on the song that when the album dropped and the video for we cant be friends premiered alongside it, I didnt bother to check either out. It wasnt until almost the summer, after hearing snippets here and there and feeling guilt as snubbing one of my all time favorites did I finally fully give the song a chance. Its truly heartbreaking to see how honest, open and raw she is here. I dont think my pride would have allowed me to make a song so apologetic, so blatant aware of what was going on around me. Yet Ariana has show before she is someone who wears her heart on her sleeve and when she's willing to tell her story, there is nothing held back. This will go down as one of the greatest songs she's ever made and one of the shining points of the decade for sure.

24. Sweet Honey Buckiin'- Beyonce (w/ Shaboozey)

Three distinct parts in a 5 minute song that lowkey summarize all three acts of the album while simultaneously flexing her country and rock and urban music roots... once again can someone point me to anyone of this century redefining what truly ground-breaking artistry is like Giselle? All I know is that this had better be part of the setlist for next week's halftime show. At LEAST the Buckiin part. Shaboozey's voice has a cool grit to it that matches Bey's and enhances instead of distracts (unlike a certain other collaborator on this album...)

23. Apple- Charli xcx

I have already made it known how much I love a dark song shrouded by upbeat production- its almost good to be so distracted you dont hear the lyrics until one day they hit you and you have to grapple with the urge to shimmy your shoulders while also sobering up at the fact that this isnt a happy song. I wont go too deep in that as im saving it for when I lavish heaps of praise on this album (spoiler but Im sure someone already guessed it) but Apple is the prime example of that on this album. Like I said with Von Dutch, I wish I latched onto this when it was just coming out.

22. A Bar Song (Tipsy)- Shaboozey

I dont think this song necessarily deserved 19 weeks at number one so to say, but I cant truly be mad at another young black man taking hold of the Billboard charts in a genre that someone of his background has traditionally been ostracized from (and still is even to this day). At its core, A Bar Song is about having fun and it exudes it perfectly. I feel as if this will carry on for decades as one of those songs you hear and you cant help but tap your foot too, years after its left the charts. Whether this stands as Shaboozey's sole career hit or as just the beginning of an illustrious career, he will go down in history for the significance of this moment.

21. Espresso- Sabrina Carpenter

Ranking possibly the two most defining hits of the year back to back was not my intention, but maybe its just another way to signify the importance they have. Honestly, I dont think anyone should keep this song off their year-end because its such a perfect song. From the jump you can hear the perky instrumentation coming into view and then: "Now he's!" and from then on you for a ride. Even if the album doesnt hold up as good as this, Im more than happy that this has been the song to take her to MPG level when she's worked so long for it.

13. The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban)- Whitney Houston

Did you guys think I wouldnt find a way to sneak her on this list? No in all honesty I was debating on whether this qualified as a new 2024 album and if it needed a spot on my list. After all these are mostly songs she recorded already and sang live numerous times before. Then I remembered this was my list and what I say goes so I put it on anyways. Plus a live album still counts in my book. The Durban concert was the least vocally impressive of the two that we have footage of now overall but still, despite the roughness, the frailty and the stuffy lungs, Whitney proves time and time again why she was and still is the greatest of all time. Her voice is resilient- even in this very concert. Just when you think the voice will finally give out, she comes back. Stronger than before and pulls off the big moment with a clarity that you didnt think she had in her. I will always treasure this and while the estate still needs to do a redo of her greatest live performances album, this is definitely a step in the right direction. Highlights: I Have Nothing, Home, So Emotional and Touch the World

12. Harlequin- Lady Gaga

I dont think I will get much pushback if I say that Gaga's first solo jazz album is her best so far. I know her reasoning for making this was to sing the songs properly with her well trained, versatile and classic voice but I think secretly (or maybe not im not sure if she's said this) she made this as a way to show off her jazz capabilities on her own for the first time on record. I am no jazz enthusiast and have heard very little of it (shout out to Samara Joy's Portrait- thats a great one) but I can say from what I hear, she has never sounded better doing it. I love how much this means to her and I found myself revisiting it more than once which is an achievement all in itself. Highlights: The Joker, Happy Mistake, Oh When the Saints and World On a String

At least just a cover of When You Wish Upon A Star.

wait a disney cover album is something i want to do myself so bad so imagine gaga doing it omgggggg

I feel like I appreciate the album more and more each passing day, but that could also be because I was just in my 50s and 60s type of traditional pop era, it usually strikes me during Christmas time because they really go hand in hand lmao.

look at our taste lmaooo i cant wait to see where kylie ranks on yours tbh

and thats so real i mean i dont usually care for traditional pop music but i feel like if i give it my time i'll find more than a handful of gems in there

Both albums certainly have recognition on my list(s). Normally I include album tracks. But this year I'm only going for singles. Throwing in album cuts IMO would have been oversaturated by certain artists.

BOAF is too low I fear :jonny6: Espresso iktr

Duo sucked all the life out of Training Season I fear. Like where was that anthemic bridge chorus that the Grammys performance had

The way people were gagging at Bridgit serving Erykah Badu in that song on my TikTok FYP :dies: I need her back in the studio IMMEDIATELY

More Than a Woman was so ahead of its time. The way I would go feral if the song is played at the club :jonny:

I missed the Aaliyah rate we had a few months ago. First got into her music around 2019 and quickly found out her estate is a headache when it came to music availability.

Based on what I see streams-wise as of today...I think it's time for Shaboozey to make another album because there has been no movement for his other tracks.

I was not aware of this Whitney album!

Probably going to be the only Harlequin nod this entire Best Of 2024 .:gaycat7:

But us Harlequin's must remain strong!

I discovered Aaliyah after her prime, and my Gr. 7 & 8 music teacher even had a whole lecture on Aaliyah (even stating the behind the scene businesses - telling us all that she was murdered). 'Try Again' and 'More Than a Woman' always played in that class, and hearing it today takes me back to those lectures. She was a true talent, I believe she was going to be absolutely massive had her time with us not been short. :heart2:

For songs, We Can't Be Friends is an absolute pop masterpiece. It deserved a nomination or two, but I think because it wasn't as 'big' as previous #1s it was forgotten about. Espresso and Bar Song are bops too, while Apple absolutely grew on me. I felt it was so dated on released, but now it's on repeat. :jamming:

Harlequin was an ambitious project, but I feel it was an incredible display of talent by Gaga. Her voice is the best it's ever been on it. Too bad it's so boring. :dancehall:

Espresso :worship:  An example of pop perfection.

Even though I'm not a big fan of this era of Dua Lipa, Training Season is a catchy track.

Expresso  I won't lie I hated it at first but it ended up being a song I really enjoy from her now, Apple was one of the songs from Charli's I liked

we can't be friends is a cute lil bop :heart2:
