Welcome to the 2024 edition of the JGib's Best of lists here on ATRL. Updates will also be posted to Threads, Bluesky, and my personal FB page. X will get select updates.

The 2024 election cycle was one for the ages, as insurrection-inciting felon-elect Donald Trump (R) managed to make a comeback and win a fraught Presidential election over incumbent VP Kamala Harris (D), who herself replaced incumbent President Joe Biden (D) as the nominee after the fallout of his June 27th debate performance against Trump revealed his mental decline to everyone to the world. A few weeks later, right before the RNC was set to start and Trump still hadn't announced his running mate yet, on July 13th, in Butler, PA at one of his rallies, Trump came within a couple of inches of being killed as he faced an assassination attempt. He also had another assassination attempt in September. During the RNC, Donald Trump tapped Ohio Sen. JD Vance (R) to be his running mate.

8 days after the assassination attempt, on July 21st, Biden announced that he would not run for another term for the Presidency, and subsequently endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris (D) to be the replacement nominee. On August 6th, Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) to serve as her ticketmate. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who initially ran as a Democrat, then switched to Independent, de facto drops out and endorses Donald Trump the day after Kamala Harris spoke at the DNC.

On November 5th/6th, 2024, we witnessed history in the making... albeit not the kind of history me or any anti-Trump person wanted to happen: the return of insurrection-inciting felon-elect Donald Trump to the White House, in which he'll use his return to enact tyranny and fascism, with help from Project 2025, Agenda 47, and the right-wing media apparatus. As for Harris, the bid to become the first woman President got foiled for the 2nd time in 8 years (Hillary lost in 2016). While the loss was a devasting one in the short-term for the Democrats, her performance helped save the party in the medium-to-long term, especially in regards to the House and Senate seats saved that would have been goners had Biden remained the nominee, not to mention keeping New Jersey, Minnesota, Virginia, New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Maine in the Democratic column statewide, along with Nebraska's 2nd Congressional district. In the aftermath, too many media outlets and institutions have capitulated to the fascist-elect, violating the Do Not Obey In Advance command.

On May 30th, 2024, Donald Trump was ruled guilty on all 34 felonies in the business record falsification trial in New York regarding Stormy Daniels. Those turned out to be the only charges he has been successfully pinned on him. The D.C. and Florida cases are all but dead, thanks to the Supreme Court in the DC case with their berserk immunity ruling in Trump v. United States and Trump-appointed judicial activist Aileen Cannon delaying the classified documents theft trial indefinitely. As for the Georgia case, the fate for that is uncertain.

Bashar al-Assad's dictatorial rule in Syria got toppled this year, the 14 years of misery in the UK under Tory rule ended, Yoon Suk Yeol got impeached in South Korea over his martial law decree, and France is facing chaos with governing.

In Israel and occupied Palestine, The Israel Apartheid State has continued their genocidal ethnic cleansing repression campaign against Palestinians in occupied Gaza and West Bank, but moreso the former, as they are seeking to destroy Gaza as part of their genocide campaign. Many campuses in the USA had student protests against the Gaza Genocide and the universities' role in complicity in propping up Israel apartheid. A few nations, including Spain, Ireland, and Norway, have recognized the State of Palestine.

Musically, this has been a big year for Sabrina Carpenter, Sum 41, Beyoncé, Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Green Day, Taylor Swift, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Linkin Park, and Post Malone. Linkin Park got a new lead singer, and her name is Emma Armstrong. Three Days Grace brought back Adam Gontier to be their co-lead singer, along with incumbent Matt Walst.

Abortion access, much like gender-affirming care and LGBTQ+ rights, has faced steady attacks in red states. With a GOP trifecta, abortion rights will be in serious jeopardy, even in blue states. Many ballot referendums on abortion won this election.

The anti-LGBTQ+ extremist assaults continued this year, as several red states have enacted harmful anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ+, and anti-drag laws, such as forced outing and forced misgendering laws, gender-affirming care bans for both trans youths and adults, legal erasure of trans (and LGBTQ+) identity, bathroom bans aimed at trans people, and more. Project 2025 gives extensive focus to anti-LGBTQ+ extremism. With a GOP trifecta, LGBTQ+ rights are in serious danger, especially trans rights.

The right-wing book-banning crusade has hit libraries and schools hard, and books banned disproportionately have pro-LGBTQ and pro-racial justice themes, as do books centering on a POC perspective.

Former Democrat-turned-Independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. being tapped to head the HHS by Trump is a sure sign that anti-vaccine extremist sentiment has been legitimized and that vaccines have become an increasingly politicized issue that began with COVID vaccines and moved onto to all routine vaccinations.

The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) continues to be an instrument for radical right-wing rule, as they ruled to protect Donald Trump from immunity and quashed efforts to remove him off the ballot on the basis of violating the spirit and wording of the 14th Amendment, Section 3. Next year, SCOTUS is set to make a major ruling on gender-affirming care in United States v. Skrmetti.

Elon Musk's destruction of X (formerly Twitter) into a far-right megaphone continues, as it has spawned Twitter-like alternatives in Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads, and Bluesky has grown bigly since Trump's win.

On the sports side, Arsenal once again blew their chance to win the Premier League title, as they lost the league title by 2 points to Manchester City. A win in either Fulham game would have been enough to give them the title, as the 5 dropped points to them proved costly. In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen completed an unbeaten season domestically, by winning the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga.

The UEFA Champions League winners were Real Madrid, as they saw off Borussia Dortmund. The UEFA Europa League was won by Atalanta 3-0 over Bayer Leverkusen, who were undefeated in all competitions until that point. Olympiacos won the UEFA Europa Conference League 1-0 in extra time over Fiorentina to give a Greek club their first ever trophy at the European continental level, and got a ticket to the Europa.

Starting this season, the formats for each of the competitions switched from group play to single league table.

In the NHL, the Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers in 7 games to win their first Stanley Cup in history. The Arizona Coyotes became dormant, and Utah HC rose up to take their place as an expansion team.

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees 4 games to 1 in the MLB. The Kansas City Chiefs went back-to-back Super Bowl champions, as they beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in OT. In the NBA, the Boston Celtics won the NBA Finals 4-1 over the Dallas Mavericks.

In the 2024 WNBA season, Caitlin Clark was selected 1st overall by the Indiana Fever. Clarkmania became the main show of the league. The New York Liberty won the WNBA title over the Minnesota Lynx 3-1.

The 2024 MLS regular season was won by the Messi-lead Inter Miami. The LA Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 to win the MLS Cup Playoffs.

In the 2024 CFB Playoff Final, Michigan beat Washington 34-14 to win their first CFP-era natty. In the 2024 Men's NCAA Basketball tournament, UConn won back-to-back their 6th trophy, as they beat Purdue 75-60. In the Women's version, the South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Caitlin Clark-led Iowa Hawkeyes 87-75 to win their 3rd title.
