Hello, it's Charlie again reporting to BO duty.

 

Welcome to my 16th YECD. Holy smoke, I bet some new members weren't even alive by the time I started making them. *cries in old*

 

Anyway, time to write a brief summary of 2024 and this year's countdowns to be presented.

 

2024 has been a very hectic year, a year that change and responsibility were the two main words that defined it. I have seen my baby become a toddler, and he seems to have an infinite source of energy stored in his little body, so I have been doing a lot of running around with him. My back aches more, but I love him so much.

 

As a result, I have enjoyed music very differently from the way I used to. It's been speakers instead of headphones for the most part of my day. Probably that's why there will be less introspective-related genres on this years' Top 100 songs. On top of everything, I've been living in another country, one that is almost on the other side of the world, so getting used to a new reality where people don't speak my native tongue was kind of hard at the beginning, but I'm sure things will be fine.

 

In terms of music, I haven't listened to my monthly playlists very much, but I have added a lot more music into them. From January to now, I have a total of 1200 songs, so out of one song that makes it into the Top 100, there are eleven that did not. In addition, I have listened to lots of albums and EPs, mainly because I needed music while running errands and doing housework and I did not want to miss out any new albums being released as compared to 2023. In order to rate the albums and EPs, I used a real-time scoring system, that is, I assigned them a score the moment I listened to the album (albeit after two listens). Before, I used to relisten to all albums heard in a given year that I thought were worth rating and then, one by one, they were assigned a score on the last month of the year. As years passed, I realized that undertaking that task in December was just much for me. Anyway, that change has lead to a list of 180 albums and 22 EPs throughout this 2024. I even managed to make a 2023 list, the only year in the 2020s I didn't make an albums ranking, but that list isn't ready to be published yet. If I'm still around, maybe I'll publish it next year.

 

There has been a great deal of music I have enjoyed. The albums list turned out to be a very competitive list, with only 8 points separating the 1st placed album from the 100th.

 

Main genres featured this year include indie pop, bedroom pop, Spanish indie pop, singer/songwriter, dreampop and shoegaze.

• Top 100 albums of 2024
• Top 100 Spanish songs of 2024
• Top 100 songs of 2024 (+1100 close calls)
• Top 100 albums of the 2020s (so far)

24 EPs from 2024 got a score. Only 10 made the final list!

 

How do I rate EPs and LPs?

Each track gets a score from 1 to 10. Then the sum gets divided by the number of tracks, and finally, that number is multiplied by ten.

 

Example:

John Smith - The Original Album

Track 1: 8

Track 2: 10

Track 3: 8

Track 4: 9

Track 5: 10

Track 6: 9

 

8+10+8+9+10+9 = (54/6)10 = 90/100

 

What does the final score mean?

It goes like this:

 

71-75: Listenable, but not really replayable

76-80: Decent

81:85: Good

86-90: Very good

91-95: Outstanding

96-100 Masterpiece

 

All in all, hitting the 80-point barrier is quite easy. However, it's very hard to pass the 90-point barrier, let alone 95.
