Suilen Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 (edited) After not doing this ever since the forum updated in 2017, I've decided that this year will be the year. I finally got my Spotify subscription back, and it was a perfect time to explore new music. It wasn't exactly a good year for mainstream releases, though. Not to name names, but I found plenty of them to be underwhelming and not my cup of tea. Khias, on the other hand, worked overtime and managed to make the year more colorful. And there were still a handful of successful artists who either had a breakthrough or surpassed their previous works. While it wasn't a bad year by any stretch of the imagination, I spent most of the time listening to old stuff, and it will be reflected in the throwback section. Some of them completely overshadow what was released this year. The bops were bopping, but would I put any of them in my all-time lists? Hmm. Anyway, I did my research (about 100 albums and EPs), and I'll be happy to share my findings. What to expect Khias from all over the world making pop and alternative music, k-pop, Japanese artists, some Ukrainian, Russian, French and Latin music, female rappers; the artists from the banner, obviously. I tried to stick to one artist per song rule, but two artists were so remarkable that they have 2 and 3 entries, respectively. What not to expect Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, men. The content Top 50 songs + 25 honorable mentions Top 13 albums + 7 honorable mentions Top 30 throwback songs (songs from the previous years, including 2023, that I discovered in 2024) A half-decade song list (more of a thought experiment) Enjoy Edited December 20, 2024 by Suilen 2 1
Curaga Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Yseult! Can't wait to see her placement (and everything else of course) 100 albums and EPs? I need to get on your level! 10 hours ago, Suilen said: What not to expect Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, men. 1
Suilen Posted December 17, 2024 Author Posted December 17, 2024 aespa - Spark - WINTER Solo I expected Winter to serve a snooze, but she lowkey served the biggest bop, exceeded all the expectations. We still need Giselle's 2hot4u, though. Ariana Grande - the boy is mine If we ignore who the boy in question is, it's pretty good. Baby Jane - Heroin Kiss Alice Glass, you will always be famous. Clairo - Sexy to Someone Congrats on escaping AntonOFF's prison. cupcakke - Dora She kinda ruined my childhood, but I'll let it pass. Speak your truth queen. DeathbyRomy - City of Angels Damn, she dragged LA to filth. Elyanna - Yabn El Eh I learned of her through the Sevdaliza collab and almost left her album for the next year, but then I got the video for this song in my recommendations, and she snapped. FLO - Nocturnal I was underwhelmed by the album, but I'm always here for a dark rnb bop. Kelly Lee Owens - Love You Got It was between this song and the title track, and Love You Got had a slight edge. Kylie Minogue - Lights Camera Action People asked for more Padams, and we got more Padams. I see no reason to complain. LISA - New Woman (feat. ROSALIA) The best song out of all the Blackpink solos this year, and Lisa in general has a good track record so far. Jennie needs to drop a proper song, and Rose needs to drop the Korean Gracie Abrams act. Mabel - Look At My Body Pt. II (feat. Shygirl) No offense, but I liked Mabel the best when she was singing Raye's demos, and that was the closest thing to it, plus Shygirl. Maggie Rogers - Drunk This is what Gracie Abrams thinks she's doing with her music. Mika Nakashima - UNFAIR At first, it was another throwback j-pop rock song by the artist whose name rhymes with salumi that took its place, but upon a revisit I had to hand it over to Mika. The fact that it's associated with an anime about cute vampire guys raising children is a bonus. Just don't google what manga it derives from. milet - hanataba The only reason I gave it a chance was that news reported that it would be produced by Yuki Kajiura, but then it turned out that Yuki Kajiura just produced the instumental theme for that dorama. Still, I gave it a listen, and it was nice. Great voice. Other songs that start with hanataba can't relate. NECTA - SEROTONIN The song title speaks for itself. Perel - Homage It's no song of the decade Jesus Was An Alien, but I still tapped my boot. Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso The things seemed bright... and then that man entered the picture. SASAMI - Just Be Friends The best out of the songs she released this year, and I'm not sure about the upcoming album. Squeeze was amazing and different, and I'm a sucker for metal influences. The new stuff doesn't sound that different from what other Asian American girls are doing. Seiko Oomori - THIS IS JAPANESE GIRL Seiko continues her quest of collecting the most prominent Japanese producers while remaining a hipster icon. It's Shinichi Osawa this time, but it's still a Seiko song through and through. She did the same by completely owning the T*tsuya K*muro's track, and it's one of the best things that man produced. Sheena Ringo - ShoKOKachi (feat. Nocchi) They finally let a Perfume girl sing without vocoder, and it slaps. Let her do a rock record! As for miss Sheena, well, the all-girls and non-binaries album isn't a bad idea, but we've been sitting on this Buddhist **** for a decade now, it's time for something new. Stereopolina - Vdvoyom The user who recommended her just dipped and never came back, though the impact will remain. She's not exactly contemplating the future of Russia like some would expect her to do, but she offers escapism for those who need it. SUMMER CAKE - I GOT U She reminds me of Jessi, except I don't have to preface the fact that I like the song with 'guilty pleasure'. Taeha - <MISLD> A worthy Yukika successor if you will. I know some want Haseul to be the one, but I'm not convinced. Tate McRae - it's ok I'm ok Tate is cute for a mindless bop now and then. She could be more, but I'm not sure what the plan for her is. The playlist: 2
Kern Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 12 hours ago, Suilen said: What not to expect Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, men. -- good idea with honorable mentions, I'd also put "the boy is mine" and "lights, camera, action" there. Not bad songs but... there are better
Album Leak Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 New Woman was pretty fun but I don't really vibe with a mid song tempo switch up. Milet hasn't released anything of note since Prover. She set the standards too high with that amazing song tbh. Light Camera Action was fine but it's TOO Padam, like.. literally Padam 2.0. But the album was called Tension II so I guess it fits, the album has a host of other good songs anyway!
Ewan Chaos Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Quote Clairo - Sexy to Someone Congrats on escaping AntonOFF's prison. LITERALLY lmfaooooooo anytime someone says Sling is her first album I HAVE to laugh. Overall agreed with you on FLO. AAA was my fave, but Nocturnal's good too. Agreed as well on Kylie, even though Padam & Tension are better songs than anything on the sequel, I think Tension II is overall better. The continued Jack shade on Sabrina's write-up nn well you picked the right song at least!
JGibson Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 it's ok I'm ok + Espresso + Lights Camera Action + Sexy To Someone
Curaga Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 the boy is mine made it on my own end-of-year playlist Love You Got is sooo good I need to buy that album tbh <MISLD>, I GOT U, City of Angels, and UNFAIR were standouts imo and these were just the honorable mentions? I'm staying tuned!

I'm staying tuned! Some HMs might be better than what's coming next but ultimately it's about what I spent the most time with. At least Selena Gomez was removed, and I won't have to explain myself! 1

Mr. Loco Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Not Taylor Swift and men banned from this list
Suilen Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 #50. Jojo Siwa - Guilty Pleasure The whole 'Karma's a *****' debacle was pretty entertaining, and if the original song wasn't from a decade ago, I would've put it on my list because I miss that kind of pop. But let's have a look at Siwa's "original" material. 'Guilty Pleasure' is, well, a guilty pleasure, this fact is obvious. It's still pretty nostalgic. I think that Siwa has some room to grow. She can't quite figure herself out yet, and it's okay. She could be another Rebecca Black. She could follow Chappell's mold. Or maybe she could stop being a poser about Kiss and show it in her music. #49. Brooke Candy - Crucify My Love Candy released plenty of stuff this year, most of which was actually nice, though nothing was touching Flip Phone (wasn't it supposed to be on one of those albums?). I liked what she did on Crucify My Love. In a way, it also recalls the good old times. #48. Zolita - Grown Up The fact that no one in the vicinity uses Zolita saddens me, but I also get it: her art is sapphic through and through. Grown Up is a different beast - it's about her sexual assult at the hands of a man when she was young. It's not an uncommon experience for a lesbian, and not everyone could tackle in on a song. Zolita handled it with grace. #47. Megan Thee Stallion - HISS I like Nicki Minaj as an artist, and I rather enjoyed my time with Pink Friday 2 despite the AI shenanigans. Nicki as a person is rotten, bitter, delusional. Hiss wasn't even about her, yet she took the bait and completely embarrassed herself. For that alone Megan deserves her flowers. The song has some merits besides that, though. Cobra and HISS were promising lead-ups to the album, which... didn't reach the same highs. Maybe Part 2 is better? #46. BIBI - Sugar Rush BIBI is one of these artists that's theoretically pushing the boundaries of k-pop. I mean, the other song on this single sounds like something Sheena Ringo would make circa KSK under more modern sauce. Sugar Rush might not be that groundbreaking, but that's why I said theoretically. Sometimes k-pop just needs to be fun. #45. Akari Takeuchi - 泣いてOVER The song isn't even out, but the video is, and that's what matters (let's ignore the mess of the cover). Despite her looking like my j-pop nemesis, the song has plenty of life in it. In a way, those Hello! Project girlies carried the poppy j-pop this year. Well, except for the original solo queen Maki Goto, we're going to pretend that didn't happen. #44. JADE - Angel of My Dreams I can't say that Little Mix ever moved me outside of Salute. To me, they represented a clear decline from the days of Girls Aloud and Sugababes. Then one of the girls debuted with a Nicki Minaj single, and it was garbage. They hadn't been on my radar until people started talking about this girl Jade and her debut. Well, I thought, it can't get any worse than Boys, right? It was weird, but I heard something. Pop should be weird and unconventional sometimes. It paid off, judging by the year-end lists. Her other songs from this year were pretty great, too. Her album is shaping up to be a potential 2025 AOTY, and I can't wait to listen to it. #43. Ashley Sienna - aphrodite For some reason, I have a feeling that this song is from a man's point of view, so let me be delusional and scream yaaas lesbians. The album was nothing to write home about, but these witch TikTok residents still have a better idea of how to make a relationship-reflecting gloomy record than some billionaires. #42. Chelsea Wolfe - Everything Turns Blue I don't have much to say here. Mother was mothering. #41. Billie Eilish - BITTERSUITE The worst thing about following successful artists is that some of their songs will do much better than others, and the latter will always be overshadowed because they didn't resonate with the GP. BITTERSUITE doesn't deserve to be the lowest streamed song on HMHAS. At least with khias, all songs usually flop equally. 2
Kern Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 I totally forgot about BITTERSUITE. I remember being obssesed with the snippet and now I don't even have it saved in my library
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Sexy to Someone, New Woman and Espresso in the honorable mentions HISS and Angel of My Dreams are instant classics this year Jojo Siwa releasing 2010s dated bop is honestly camp. I kinda wish she would recorded a bunch of Rock Mafia's outtakes from the Disney girls' albums for her next project because i would actually tune in 1
Album Leak Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 I keep forgetting HISS is from 2024, it feels like forever ago I played it a bunch then forgot all about it.. I do think it deserves the nod though!
Mezik Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 HISS and Angel of My Dreams are STANDOUTS of 2024. They deserve all the flowers.
