Not yet horrors of terrorism. No mass migration fueled hateful populist politics. The tech was at a good level without messing up our lives and minds too much. No social media. No chronically online behaviours. People went outside to physically meet and interact with each other. Children played outside and with each other instead of being glued to gadgets. Perhaps the acceptance wasn't full for minorities, but most social aspects were well tolerated. There was strong, widely recognised and shared pop culture - currently it's way too fragmented, so there's less that's commonly shared among random people or even friends. Politics was cordial, there were a certain number of channels that everyone watched, which weren't crazy polarised. Disinformation wasn't rampant. There was still common sense and knowledge of basic historical and scientific things without conspiracy theories dominating public opinion. No overtourism. Climate change was still pretty dormant. Basically a lot of societal aspects were at their peak, while most of the downsides from previous decades weren't so bad any longer. It was far from perfect, but it was pretty good overall. Looking at society with the 90s lense the present day is giving nothing but mental illness in most aspects. It's like we're on an accelerated path to self destruction on a micro and macro scales. Even though we're at a peak technological and scientific knowledge, it's no longer trickling down to an average person, who is getting dumber and dumber and gets further bogged down in disinformation and further frying their brain with social media or some other crazy stuff. 1

SoundsandSongs Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago As someone who didn't exist in the 90s it's crazy to see the unanimous vote for 90s. 90s seems so ancient and I don't know how I'd survive without widespread internet.
AxelFox Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I wish I could live through the 90s as a teen on loop for eternity. It's truly been downhill ever since.

The WTC bombing, Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber, Olympics bombing, Tokyo Metro, the 1998 embassy bombings, the failed Y2K plot, Columbine…
illia Posted just now Posted just now I'd go to the 1980s to experience life in Soviet Union and witness the beginning of its end
