XDNA Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago The Supreme Court said Friday that it will hear a case related to California's ability to set its own, often strict vehicle emissions standards that include curbs on greenhouse gases. It has become a fraught and politicized issue, especially since California began regulating greenhouse gases in an effort to combat climate change. Due to the size of the California market, the state's regulations hold considerable sway over vehicle manufacturers. The case, which could take on additional importance when President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, stems from the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to issue national standards under the federal Clean Air Act. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-weigh-californias-authority-set-vehicle-emissions-standa-rcna176100 This could be really bad for the environment.
Raver Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Quote The state ultimately wants all cars and light trucks to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035 This is where the state is wrong and they need to lose. The amount of taxes we pay from the DMV to the pump all because we choose to drive gasoline cars is ridiculous. They are not going to get us to change to EV like that. California's grid wouldn't be able to handle it either, just this past summer the Hollywood bowl had to cancel a show because they had a power outage. 1

This is why so many Americans drive a huge SUV or Truck, because gasoline is so cheap. 1

This thread and case specifically is talking about California, not the whole USA The prices in California are expensive and increasing the tax is not going to get people to move to EV. Quote California has the highest gas tax in the United States, with a total tax of 68.1 cents per gallon as of January 2024: State Excise Tax: 59.6 cents per gallon Federal Excise Tax: 18.4 cents per gallon State and Local Sales Taxes: 3.8 percent on average https://calmatters.org/environment/climate-change/2024/11/california-fuels-standard-gas-prices-climate-change/

It probably should be higher in California too.

But it's actually slightly lower now in December: https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=CA California average: $4.335 Meanwhile in the United Kingdom: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1293135/uk-weekly-average-gas-prices/ On December 9, 2024, the price of ultra-low sulfur unleaded petrol (gasoline) in the United Kingdom averaged 136.23 pence per liter. Second source: Unleaded 136.60p per litre https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/fuel-watch/ Converting 136.23 pence to $USD = 1.72 Converting 1 litre to US gallons = 0.2641720524 US gallons The UK price is 1.72/0.2641720524 or about $ 6.50 USD It seems like California is still reasonably cheap by the standards of a lot of western nations.

I'm not sure what your point is here. If California were a country, it would be one of the world's top 20 emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs).

My point is idc what the cost of gas is in another country. It can $10 I will still say the price of gas in California is out of control. Saying that the residents of California should be happy with the price of gas because "it costs more" in another country is silly and not worth entertaining. Maybe go show your conversions to the Supreme Court and see what they say 1
