Little Dark Age Posted July 28, 2017 Author Posted July 28, 2017 NOTES Spoiler Another eight new songs debut on this week’s chart led by new efforts by Tyler, the Creator and Lana Del Rey. Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” continues as the chart topper, extending its reign to a seventh consecutive week, fending off strong competition even as its lead over the rest of the pack shrinks. In the process, “Redbone” becomes the longest running No. 1 single of the year by passing the six weeks achieved by Spoon’s “Can I Sit Next to You” (which is back up 22-17 this week). It also exits a three way tie for the 7th longest running No. 1, moving into a three way tie for the 5th longest running No. 1 in the chart’s history. Here’s a quick look at its standing among other top runners: Longest Running No. 1 Singles 11, Applause - Lady Gaga (2013; August 22 - October 24, November 21) 11, The Hills - The Weeknd (2015; June 18, July 2 - August 27, October 22) 9, The Less I Know the Better - Tame Impala (2016; March 17 - May 12) 8, Don’t You Worry Child - Swedish House Mafia feat. John Martin (2012-2013; December 6 - January 24) 7, Diamonds - Rihanna (2012; October 11 - November 22) 7, Redbone - Childish Gambino (2017; June 15 - present) 7, Something In the Way You Move - Ellie Goulding (2015-2016; October 29, December 17 - January 21) 6, Hello - Adele (2015; November 5 - December 10) 6, Can I Sit Next to You - Spoon (2017; March 23 - April 13, May 18 - 25) “Redbone” also tops the R&B/Hip-Hop genre chart for a seventh week. After a huge seven spot jump last week, Kesha’s “Praying” holds steady at No. 2. It continues to close the gap with current front runner “Redbone” and even led at the midweek stage. It remains the top performer on the Pop songs sub-chart, holding for a second week. Lorde’s “Sober” rebounds 4-3 as “Wild Thoughts” collapses out of the top 5. It subsequently rebounds 3-2 on the Pop songs genre chart, as “Wild Thoughts” declines 2-3. Despite the rebound, “Sober” is Lorde’s first top 5 entry to not reach No. 1 on the main chart. Even though parent LP Dedicated to Bobby Jameson departs the top slot on the Albums chart, Ariel Pink’s ‘wall of sound’ and alternative pop crossover “Time to Live” bounds 6-4. It consequently spends a second frame at No. 1 on the Alternative songs genre chart. Although it’s fairly new, ‘Time’ is a strong contender for reaching No. 1 on the main chart. Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” continues to defy expectations, holding 5-5 and notching an incredible 16th week in the top 10. Although it peaked two months ago, the track refuses to loosen its grip on the competition as it steamrolls towards a platinum certification. After several weeks just outside the top 10, Vince Staples’ “Big Fish” darts 11-6 to a new peak. The track, which previously reached as high as No. 7, has now spent more weeks in the top 10 than its predecessor “BagBak” (No. 4 earlier this year) and looks to repeat said track’s streak of longevity within the top 20. As a side note, Vince has the most top 10s of any artist this year with three: the aforementioned “BagBak”, “Big Fish” and “Rain Come Down” (No. 10). French Montana and Swae Lee’s “Unforgettable” remains even at No. 7 for a second week, it’s current peak to date. As mentioned earlier, DJ Khaled’s collaboration with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller “Wild Thoughts” collapses 3-8 as overexposure begins to set in. Tyler, the Creator notches the first top 10 debut of his career and second ever top 10 with Flower Boy highlight “I Ain’t Got Time!”. Although it fails to match his absolute highpoint, achieved with “911/Mr. Lonely” just two weeks ago, there’s still quite a bit of potential left in the song. Rounding out the top 10, Blossoms’ “Texia” holds 10-10 as it refuses to die. It notches a 16th week in the top 10 and continues to inch its way towards a platinum certification. Just a bit lower on the chart, Lana Del Rey's "Cherry" blasts in at No. 18. That already outpeaks all of her prior entries from the Lust For Life era: "Love" stalled at No. 62 while the title track featuring The Weeknd maxed out at No. 52. In fact it's the singer's second highest charting effort to date and her highest ranking entry in nearly four years. She last ranked higher in August 2013 when "Summertime Sadness" reached No. 3. THIS WEEK IN No. 1s 5 YEARS - "Wide Awake" - Katy Perry (first week) 4 YEARS - "Red Cup" - Katy Tiz (fourth week) 3 YEARS - "Maps" - Maroon 5 (third week) 2 YEARS - "The Hills" - The Weeknd (fifth week) 1 YEAR - "Into You" (fourth week) ALBUMS In an interesting turn of events, a two way tie for the No. 1 spot on the albums chart leads to Tyler, the Creator scoring his first chart topping effort. Flower Boy, Tyler’s critically acclaimed fourth studio album, notched 53 plays to secure the No. 1 debut. It was eligible to chart on last week’s list due to a premature leak but did not rank within the top 30. Back to this week’s sum, that’s the lowest for a No. 1 album since early June. But that could easily change next week: Flower Boy could easily improve its score in its first full week of legitimate release. Meanwhile, Ariel Pink’s Dedicated to Bobby Jameson declines 1-2 also with 53 plays. While that would have given Dedicated a second week at No. 1, its 64% decline compared to Flower Boy’s 1700% uptick causes the latter newbie to take the top slot; a reverse Billboard 200 experience. Lorde’s Melodrama holds steady 3-3 in its fifth outing despite suffering another steep (66.4%) decline. It has now spent five consecutive weeks in the top 3 and is approaching platinum status (denoting 1000 plays). Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. returns to the chart’s top 10 as it jumps 12-4 amid a 175% spike in plays. It has now spent 10 weeks in the chart’s upper region and 15 weeks on the chart altogether. Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life makes a rather lackluster debut at No. 5 with 32 plays. But there’s not all bad news for Lana; she’s already tracking ahead on next week’s building chart, where she currently sits at No. 2. SZA’s CTRL declines 4-6 with a 23.7% drop in plays as Portugal. The Man’s Woodstock moves 8-7 amid a 26.1% increase in points on the heels of the rebounding “Feel It Still” and Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory drops 2-8 with a 79.6% point decline. Rounding out the top 10, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!” is off 33.2% as it slides 5-9 and Foster the People’s Scared Hearts Club bows at No. 10. ARTIST 50 Tyler, the Creator jumps 28-1, notching his first week atop the Artist 50. Meanwhile Ariel Pink dips 1-2 after debuting in the top slot last week. Lorde holds at No. 3, notching a 26th week on the chart and a 10th week in the top 10. Kendrick Lamar hops 16-4, hitting his best rank since mid June when he put up a fourth frame at No. 1. Lana Del Rey jumps 34 slots to No. 5, reaching a new peak in her 9th week being listed. She has been present on the chart on and off since the first issue in February 2016. Linkin Park scores this week’s top debut, entering straight in at No. 13 with just a few days of plays recorded following the passing of Chester Bennington on Thursday morning. The 2007 title “What I’ve Done” accounts for most of their total this week. witness1.3 Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I hope Praying is able to overtake Redbone. Sober is doing very well for just being an album track. The Cure still holding onto the top 15, I wish It would have stuck around longer on my chart. Cherry debuting so high, It’s one of my L4L faves. Surprised to still see Love On The Brain in the top 40. Disconnect highkey flopping, It didn’t deserve this.
Topmaster 2 Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Tyler, the Creator scares me a little Great layout btw.
Little Dark Age Posted August 3, 2017 Author Posted August 3, 2017 (edited) NOTES Spoiler Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” holds steady at No. 1 for an eighth week, rebounding in points and furthering the gap between the top 2 songs. “Redbone” further enters a tie for the fifth longest reign in chart history and extends its lead as longest running No. 1 single from 2017. John Martin (2012-2013; December 6 - January 24) 8, Redbone - Childish Gambino (2017; June 15 - present) 7, Diamonds - Rihanna (2012; October 11 - November 22) 7, Something In the Way You Move - Ellie Goulding (2015-2016; October 29, December 17 - January 21) 6, Hello - Adele (2015; November 5 - December 10) 6, Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars (2015; February 5, March 12 - April 9) 6, Can I Sit Next to You - Spoon (2017; March 23 - April 13, May 18 - 25) “Redbone” also tops the R&B/Hip-Hop genre chart for an eighth week. Follow up track “Terrified” punches 72-66 on the main chart. Kesha’s “Praying” once again finds itself blocked from the top slot, having to settle for the runner-up slot for a third straight week. This week it remains even in points, marking the first week that it has failed to grow in strength. As for consolation prizes? Follow up promotional track “Learn to Let Go” nets the second highest chart debut this week, entering at No. 37. Further, “Praying” leads the Pop songs genre chart for a third week. Ariel Pink’s polarizing and genre-bending “Time to Live” pushes 3-4 even as parent album Dedicated to Bobby Jameson continues to decline on the albums chart, which it led for a single week last month. Still a contender for the No. 1 slot in the future, ‘Live’ continues the trend of second singles breathing live back into lead singles. As was the case with Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” (No. 3) having a halo effect for previously overlooked lead single “Noise Pollution” (also No. 3) earlier this year, ‘Live’ continues to dominate as prior single “Another Weekend” lifts into the top 40 (42-40). Lorde’s “Sober” reverses course yet again, down 3-4. Although it’s not dead yet, its chances at No. 1 are becoming increasingly less likely. Also sad news for Lorde: “Green Light” departs the top 20 (19-24) for the first time after a 21 week stay. On the flip side, “Sober II (Melodrama)” continues to power on, moving 35-27. French Montana and Swae Lee’s “Unforgettable” hits a new peak of No. 5 after two weeks at No. 7. It becomes the first top 5 for both artists; Swae Lee previously reached as high as No. 8 with “Black Beatles” while French Montana has never charted before. Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3” roars 24-6. It’s Uzi’s first ever top 10 single on the chart and climbs to No. 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop genre chart. Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” slides 5-7 as it falls outside of the top 5 for the first time in months. It notches a 17th week in the top 10 and it moves towards platinum status. Tyler, the Creator’s “I Ain’t Got Time!” maintains a strong stance in its second frame, up 9-8. It is now just 1 spot away from tying Tyler’s all time high point, which he achieved with “911/Mr. Lonely” just a few weeks ago (No. 7). Queens of the Stone Age’s “The Way You Used to Do” blasts nearly 30 spots into the top 10, moving 37-9. The Mark Ronson helmed track is the first ever top 10 from the group and the sixth top 10 involving Ronson. Ronson’s streak of hits is only gaining in momentum: he notched a six week No. 1 in 2015 (“Uptown Funk”) and two top 5’s in 2016 (“Perfect Illusion” and “A-YO”) and is on his second top 5 of the year after “Million Reasons”. Rounding out the top 10, Blossoms’ “Texia” once again holds 10-10 as it refuses to die. It notches a 17th week in the top 10 and continues to inch its way towards a platinum certification. ALBUMS Several weeks ago I thought this week might belong to the incoming Arcade Fire album. Unfortunately that project turned out to be awful, leading to a rather quiet week at the top of the heap. After last week’s photo finish, Tyler, the Creator holds at No. 1 for a second week with Flower Boy. The acclaimed studio effort, which launched at No. 1 last week with 53 plays, hikes 54.7% to 82 plays in its first full week of legitimate release, leaving a 30 play gap between the top 2 this week. Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life makes a 5-2 jump amid a 62.5% jump against little to no competition. Despite being weakened by its unnecessary middle section, which should’ve been cut entirely, Lust For Life benefits from housing some of Lana’s career standouts. Lana is even present on the Hot 75 with several non-singles: album track “Cherry” descends 18-38 in its second week as “13 Beaches” moves to a new peak of No. 54. Meek Mill rounds out the top 3 with his spectacular new album “Wins & Losses”, now available for ALL on Tidal. In actuality, Ariel Pink’s Dedicated to Bobby Jameson declines 2-3 with 45 plays, down just 15.1% in its third frame. Lorde’s Melodrama is off 3-4 in its sixth outing despite increasing 11.4% in plays. It has now spent six consecutive weeks in the top 5 and is approaching platinum status (denoting 1000 plays). SZA’s CTRL pushes 6-5 with a slight 3.5% increase in points as Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. descends 4-6 with a 9.1% drop in plays. It has now spent 11 weeks in the chart’s upper region and four solid months on the chart altogether. Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory rebounds 8-7 with a 14.3% point decline, swapping slots with Portugal. The Man’s Woodstock (7-8) which drops 27.6% in plays. Rounding out the top 10, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!” is off 5% as it holds steady at No. 9 and Spoon’s Hot Thoughts rebounds 29-10. ARTIST 50 Tyler, the Creator holds at No. 1, notching his second week atop the Artist 50. Meanwhile Ariel Pink also holds, spending another week at No. 2.
