Eugenio Derbez drags Selena's performance in Emilia Pérez, Selena responds.

In an interview with critic Gaby Meza, the Mexican icon, actor and comedian agreed with the idea that Selena's performance in the movie is "bad"

"I think what happens with Selena, despite having many fans and knowing they will defend her... but Spanish is not her primary or secondary language, she doesn't speak it, and that's why I feel that she doesn't know what she's saying. She doesn't bring any depth to her performance... It's either extreme crying or being very angry; there are no middle grounds, and that's why her performance is not only unconvincing but also uncomfortable..."

"...I was there with film experts, and we would look at each other every time one of her scenes came up, staring at each other and asking, "Is this real? Is this what we're seeing?" It's obvious her limited ability with Spanish"  Eugenio said.

After those comments, Selena defended herself in the TikTok of the interview that went viral:

Thoughts? I've seen the movie already and it's not that she can't act... it's just that THIS performance is cringe af, 100% because of the way she talks :duck:

Girl **** him. I promise you his English isn't that much better for him to be saying **** like that.
Selena's acting is fine, sure, her Spanish could've been better, but her acting was fine and she received Best Actress at Cannes, so or course this was gonna pull jealous Latinos (I'm Latino, Mexican before any of yall get any ideas) out of their hiding places to try and tear her down.
Regardless of Eugenio thinking this interview was gonna reach her or not, it truly blows my mind that actors speak of their peers like that, especially in a public manner.

Im a native southamerican with spanish as native language. Colombian and i loved selena acting. Feels so raw and honest.
Me encanto. Ella aun sin ser latina nativa me gusto lo que hizo. Se le ve que se esforzo
Las canciones muy dulces. Hay una que otra cosa que pudo haber sido corregida con un coach de traducciones pero la peli se siente organica

This guy is a joke. All his movies are such a cringe. Que mejor vaya a ver si puso la marrana este mamaracho payaso naca. El es de esos latinos que en vez de construir destruyen. Resentido inmundo. :giraffe: Deja a selenita en paz culebra. Ese esta es para cosas basicas tipo televisa

I mean, Selena Gomez just isn't a legendary actor. Her character is meant to be an American speaking Spanglish, so I didn't mind her pronunciation being a bit unnatural-sounding. She did enough to not drag down the movie, in my opinion. She does not deserve any awards or accolades for her performance individually, though.

as bad as her acting is (and it is), the accent is the least of the issues precisely because she is playing an american who learned a new language. It's not meant to sound perfectly mexican  :gaycat4:

I just know he's bitter because it's a bunch of foreigners getting recogniton with a Spanish language movie. Honestly... f him...

I wish she didn't respond. She doesn't owe anything to this mfcker... Someone should change her password and hide it until March.

Her acting is fine. There is a reason she got a one minute standing ovation at the Canne Film Festival for her portrayal of the character.

Selena, if America is intent on backstabbing you, simply relocate to Europe where we have a positive perception.

I, for one, thought Selena did an excellent job in EP. Her last couple of scenes that she shared with Karla and Edgar were probably the most moving moments in the film for me. Furthermore, I don't think she gets enough credit for doing a full on musical in another language than her own. Even I, as a Hispanic American (whose first language is Spanish), have lost my Spanish dominance, and while I am fluent; I speak my Spanish with a gringo accent because of the environment I've grown up in and my English schooling.

Thankfully, for every Eugenio, there are other Latinos like Guillermo del Toro and Salma Hayek (among others) that are throwing their support behind this movie and the Latino cast.

Big words from the person who gave the worst performance of the SAG Ensemble winning cast of CODA

I have to see this film, everything I'm hearing about it is wild.

That said, it's so unusual to see an actor come out strongly against another actor and rip them to shreds, usually there's more solidarity. Jealousy?

she spilled though. She's taking the criticism and im glad she called out his fake ass. He made a post about the movie congratulating everyone while promoting his stuff

His answer is more cringe than anything considering his past attempts in English.

Selena was good in the movie. She's not a legendary actress but she's been improving and gave a solid performance, which is why she's getting some buzz. This almost reads as jealousy, I don't know why people would go out of their way to insult someone's performance. I couldn't bring myself to do that if I were a celebrity, it would just seem so bitter.

I liked her overall character arc but there were some points in the film where I questioned if she knew what she was saying

If her character was supposed to be from a spanish speaking country I would understand the criticism since there are many times american born actors play roles of people who are supposed to be foreigners so the least they have to do is sound natural, but Selena's character was american so her spanish wasn't supposed to sound native anyways. Other than that, she did really well in her acting. The way he worded did sounded like hate tbh.

As someone who doesn't speak Spanish, I actually thought this was Selena's best role :skull: precisely because she plays… well, she plays an American with latin roots who doesn't command the language perfectly and is mostly helpless and confused in the movie, she essentially played herself

I feel bad for all the hate she gets from music to movies now.
