I think that, if anything, this proves that Dems aren't chasing Never Trump Republicans and NeoCons because they believe there's an electoral advantage to doing so, but because this is what they want to be as a political party. They WANT to be the party of warmongering and permanent austerity. They want to never have to deal with a base who have actual expectations of them, which is why they've shifted their entire focus toward attracting wealthy suburbanites and educated PMC types making six figure salaries. That way they can still rake in a ton of cash donations while being a permanent minority and never having to actually govern.
