Multilingual ATRLers: do you watch films/shows in the original language or dubbed?

Like something on Netflix or whatever. Do you watch it in English or "your" language, whether thats German, Swedish, etc.

Never dubbed. It's just very uncommon in The Netherlands in general to watch something that's dubbed.

Only movies for children get dubbed in Dutch, and even then I prefer the original

English, German, and Italian media I'll watch in those languages.

 

As for media originally in languages I don't understand, either English or German subs or an Italian dub. (EN and DE dubs are notoriously unlistenable.)

Italian dubs are amazing, I usually watch in italian unless it's something like Wicked where I want to listen to the artists

In the original language or with English subtitles.

 

They usually dub media here by leaving the original voices in and talking over them, so if you want you can still listen to what they say in the original language. As a child I always thought that was very helpful and made me memorize phrases and words along the way, because I would hear the original and then the translated lines simultaneously

Original language and subtitles is fine for everything except Japanese Anime. I grew up with english and spanish versions of Dragon Ball, Pokémon, etc; I refuse to listen to the originals. Satoshi is not my Ash Ketchum.

Depends on the type of content, situation, specific language and mood I'm in, but generally OG. 

 

At the movie theater I always prefer the OG language when it's available because I'm gonna be fully focused on the movie and it does make for the superior experience, although with big blockbusters that don't provide all that much more than fun entertainment I don't really care. They usually do a fine job with the dub. 

 

With languages I don't understand it depends on my expectations and how interested I am. Squid Game I couldn't be bothered to watch in its OG language because I only semi-cared about it and wasn't willing to have my eyes glued to the TV 100% of the time.

 

In German, there's often a big quality difference in movie dubs and show dubs. Shows are often unwatchable whereas movies are usually at least okay.

I prefer the original that will never change. It doesn't matter if I don't understand the language I'll watch as it came without a dub. I'll add English subs as a backup.

Dubbing only works in animated films or soap operas bc they somehow find a way to be even more extra than the original.

Movies are never dubbed here luckily.

Except for animated ones that is because kids, although some cinemas offer them subtitled as well but that's not common.

I don't like reading subtitles. So if it's not Dutch or English, I watch the dubbed version.

Depends on the mood. Dubbing is very common here and there are often several variants to choose from. But I also like to watch TV shows in English (with subs). I hate voice-over though.

always original language with subtitles, even if it's a language I don't speak (for exemple, Netflix's Dark sounds even more haunting and nerve wracking in German, can't imagine watching it dubbed). Only exception would be the Pixar movies that I grew up with, since the Portuguese dubbing is very nostalgic to me.

Yes I do. It provides a shorthand to accessing foreign language storytelling in a convenient way.
