John Slayne Posted November 29 Posted November 29 honestly the more i think about it the more i support it
Almighty Gaga Posted November 29 Posted November 29 "Social media platforms will have one year to figure out how to implement the ban before getting fined." I support it, but coming up with a law without a plan to implement it, then dumping it as the platform's responsibility is crazy 2 2 5 1
glitch Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Good. Kids don't need to be posting pictures of themselves or sharing their opinions online and have any of that held against them later in life. I do wish more parents would take a bit more responsibility for their children's online activities though. It's super irresponsible to give a child access to the internet with zero supervision or safeguarding. 9 1

They have no way to enforce this. 1

NewStanner Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Considering how many homophobia/transphobia/racism-propaganda fed kids we have on social media nowadays, I can't lie, this is not that bad of an idea 6 2

Countries who have done it effectively basically directly regulate apps. For example, in China, Douyin has a "Youth Mode" for kids where the user can only use the app for 40 minutes a day and not after 10 PM. 1
willmcclure9 Posted November 29 Posted November 29 (edited) As if there isn't a literal cost of living and rental crisis they should be worried about 💀 I would've killed myself when I was a teenager without social media, it's really important to queer kids/teenagers Edited November 29 by willmcclure9 3 1
elevate Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Yeah, it's good news. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. One option will be to see whether a person's account has a link to credit cards (via the app store account) and using that as an identifier. Then there's the trickier ones: facial or biometric recognition, or using a driver's licence. I think these have significant privacy concerns, so I hope they go with the credit card option, even if it's possible to bypass. The opponents of this bill from the LGBTQ+ community have stated that it could make it harder for young queer kids to find community online, and while I agree with this, there's no doubt AT ALL in my mind that social media is making younger guys more homophobic and transphobic, and that limiting their access will hopefully mean they interact with real life girls (a novel conceit!) and spend less timing using us as scapegoats, which should ultimately make us safer. Twitch and Tiktok will be limited, which is fantastic, but there's no guarantee on YT yet, which is cesspool for right-wing lunatics nowadays. The bill is being put forth with approval by our (ostensible) centre-left party, but it has support from the right, as well. Tbh, the age gap between me and these kids is negligible, but I honestly think the last few years alone have degraded the intelligence of younger men in such a dramatic fashion that we could raise the age ban to 18 and I'd support it. If your intelligence and critical thinking skills are noticeably lower than mine (a complete fool), then you need more time in school / with friends, and less time online. 4

Capris Groove Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Yesss baby! Haven't they shown that kids/teenagers today have way below average academic capabilities, compared to previous generations? It's because they're rotting their brains with TikTok all day.
YellowRibbon Posted November 29 Posted November 29 Ban Twitch and mark all videos by famous streamers on Youtube that include political propaganda as "not adequate for people younger than 16" 2

It's overall having a net negative impact, so this was the right choice. 2 1 2
