I really need those that think this is a gotcha about how a woman of color might have slave-owning ancestors. I invite you to use your imagination.

Maybe I'm looking too much into this, but the way Elon speaks so innocuously about slavery being a common practice I find disgusting.

You aren't looking too much into it at all. Elon acts desensitized towards the subject because he has the luxury to do so.

He's the type of person that uses subtle rhetoric to try to "normalize" slavery - purely from a capitalistic/economic standpoint. Which speaks volumes about his character.

Once again this privileged white man tries to "educate" us with another s****y take.

This comment actually shows how little he understands history. White nations built power through slavery and othering, but their empires never last long. They mostly fall apart within 200 - 250 years because they're based on exploitation.

Meanwhile, ancient societies like that of the Egyptians thrived for thousands of years, without relying on slavery. Contrary to popular belief, the pyramids weren't built by slaves. They were built by workers who were paid.

Their societal structure was socialist. During the Nile's abundant season people would work on agriculture and gather food. During its flood season when farming wasn't possible, they switched to working on community projects like building the pyramids and were paid in food, beer, and shelter. This was a cooperative system.

This t*** just spouts whatever he wants in the name of white fragility

I'm not defending Elon Musk at all, but I watched this episode of Finding Your Roots, and even I was taken aback by how ignorant Sunny Hostin was when it came to history. Being as educated as she is, it was a little surprising. She was basically like "I always thought I was Puerto Rican...I can't believe I have European ancestors...from Spain? Wow." Even the host was like "um how do you think your ancestors got to Puerto Rico in the first place?"

Then again, this is the same woman who thought solar eclipses were caused by climate change.

Well he's basically the direct descendent of slave owners.

Not surprising considering his family money comes from blood diamonds during apartheid South Africa.

If he could, he would have slaves. But I guess corporate America is the next best thing

Not related to the OP but idk who told you Egyptians didn't have slaves but that's… incredibly wrong. The pyramids weren't built by slaves but that doesn't erase the thousands of years slavery existed in ancient Egypt.

They did, but the point I am making is that their society did not rely on free slave labour to thrive.

In ancient Egypt, most slaves were prisoners of war or people in debt, and they actually had a lot more liberties compared to what happened during slavery in America or apartheid South Africa. Egyptian society didn't depend on slave labour to function. Their economy was built by paid workers, not on the mass exploitation of slaves.

Slaves in Egypt were often part of households and could even gain freedom or move up in society. They weren't treated like second-class citizens or violently oppressed based on their race.

Which is completely different from what happened in America and apartheid South Africa, both relied on chattel slavery to build their economies. This is when a slave has no rights and is completely the property of their owner.

Free labor on plantations and in production was the driving force behind this colonial expansion. Only slave owners got rich off it, other white people weren't exactly living large. Slavery was the foundation for how these societies propped themselves up. It's how America got rich quick.

Elon is clearly trying to brush over history to defend his ancestors who were slave owners in apartheid South Africa. His claim is broad and dismissive. This isn't a universal issue, other peoples had completely different societal systems, where slavery wasn't a thing, and people aren't descended from slaves or slave owners. Example South Americas, India, Feudal Japan

Slavery as it existed in the West, especially in apartheid and colonial America, was uniquely brutal, dehumanising and race-based. Elon's comments show a lack of remorse and empathy. He is trying to downplay the trauma of a system his family directly benefited from.
