SoldierofLove Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I've always hated lip synced musical films but still enjoyed them because that's the standard. While there have been some movies with a bit of live singing mixed in, and the love it or hate it all live singing Les Misérables, none have been able to capture the magic of live singing that Wicked has because the leads can actually sing well. I watched Wonka today and just could not get into the musical numbers because they felt so fake. I'm not expecting the genre to change but it would be nice if Wicked causes a shift to more live singing. That's all 2
Sheep Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) I think the talent level of the leads is the more important thing here. Edited 8 hours ago by Sheep 1
Joaco95 Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago For Wicked was just PR they did sing live on their scenes but they jus put the studio recording in post production 1 7
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I think the era of casting actors who are not trained and/or talented singers as leads in musicals is hopefully over. The whole point of a musical (imo) is I want to be dazzled, wow'ed and surprised. One of the main ways to do that is just jaw dropping and almost dream-like musical numbers full of belts, high notes, harmonies, etc. basically displays of exceeding talent that the cast of wicked did Hollywood has been too focused on the visuals, names on face value, and everything BUT the whole point of musicals for too long. At the end of the day I am watching FOR the music: vocals, orchestra, arrangements, just all around musical talent. Everything else is just cherry on top to me I don't want to watch a musical to watch Russell Crowe mumble as a French general or Timothee half-heartedly sing about the Willy Wonka experience 1 1
Saintlor Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I hated how wicked wasn't live. the leads can both sing so why not make it live? the marketing led us to believe the music was live too 1 2

I believe they still took the voice recordings they did in the scenes, but the post-production makes it impossible for me to call it 'live', since it's a blatant studio version 1
ChooseyLover Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Do they sing live in Wicked? My curiosity is through the roof now. I thought all musical films were lipsynced but I only watched two or three.
Onyxmage Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago no. Especially when they need to do tons of takes for musical numbers. 3

So, just in the way they filmed the talking voices, they also recorded the singing voices, but there was obvious post-production given to the singing voices, and there were too many takes, so the result sounds very 'studio version'. These are some BTS: 1 1

Tusk Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago The leads were singing live but the dancers were lip synching to tracks that were recorded by former Wicked Broadway performers.
commander Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago I think the vocals we hear were recorded live in the shooting. I suppose they just took the best parts and compiled it into a final version but there was no studio recording session per se it's my understanding. Regardless, Ariana and Cynthia have definitely set a new standard for musicals in cinema. 1
Cain Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I watched Emilia Pérez recently and that was the best musical movie I've seen, the singing actually added to the story and it was done in a non cringey way, very good
Alaska. Posted 31 minutes ago Posted 31 minutes ago This thread reminds me of when I read the Glee cast sang their covers live, so I believed those were their raw vocals for the longest time
