prettyinpink940 Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Yesterday after work I went to the doctor because I was feeling pretty bad (sore throat, coughing, general fatigue) and I'm now on sick leave until tomorrow, Wednesday. I would have Wednesday off anyway, so I've missed one day at work so far. I told my boss that I'll probably come back on Thursday, but I don't know if I'll really feel fit enough by then. The job is pretty physical. I just feel extremely guilty about it and it's so embarrassing that I would have to write again to say that I'm sick for longer. I would have to work on Thursday and Friday and then not again until next week. So I'd be off for two more days if I don't come in on Thursday. Someone would have to come in specially to take over my shift. I know that tomorrow is another day, but yes... other people call in sick all the time and I'm racking my brains about it. I hate it. 1

Dear Reader Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Don't feel bad. I know we have a lot of pressure to always be present at work, but I've learned that taking care of yourself first should be your priority. Specially in this world where companies don't care about us and we're treated just as numbers. Get well soon and get some rest, enjoy the time off 9

That's not embarrassing that is a completely normal thing to do, I've seen it so many times at work. But the earlier you communicate the better so do it now:)
gatito Posted November 26 Posted November 26 your health should always come first so take this time to rest and get better and come back to work when you're ready
SapphireSky Posted November 26 Posted November 26 (edited) Why are some people so scared of calling in sick I have never once felt guilty Edited November 26 by SapphireSky 7 5
St. Charles Posted November 26 Posted November 26 There are a lot of people that never miss work and push through their sickness, only to get laid off after 20 years of service and the company doesn't so much as lose sleep over it. Take care of your health. 26-year-old who died from stress from her toxic job earlier this year (and nobody from the company attended her funeral): https://www.hindustantimes.com/trending/ey-pune-employee-anna-sebastian-perayil-26-died-due-to-work-stress-no-one-from-ernst-young-attended-funeral-101726637649530.html 5
Dear Reader Posted November 26 Posted November 26 3 minutes ago, SapphireSky said: Why are some people so scared of calling in sick I have never once felt guilty It comes from the way you're treated at work when you tell someone you're sick. On my previous job, every single time I called in sick they only asked me when I was going to be available again to work without ever asking me if I was okay or if I needed anything. Capitalism is a *****. 3
Infatuation_Junkie Posted November 26 Posted November 26 It's not like u called in sick for the eras tour

l3disko Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I used to feel guilty about calling out sick too, to the point where I'd just suck it up and come into work with a fever. It wasn't until I changed jobs where my supervisor abused their sick leave to the point they were getting in trouble that I started getting more comfortable with the idea of using it myself. Since then I've called out sick just because I didn't 'feel like' working that day. I've never had to have someone come in to cover for my shift though, that must be rough. 1

blown away Posted November 26 Posted November 26 You definitely shouldn't feel guilty. It sounds like you are actually sick, so you definitely deserve some rest. No one should give you the side eye for this. Also, you work to live, you don't live to work. The company's needs shouldn't be prioritized over your own health. I can only advise you to take this sick leave to take care of yourself. I hope you'll feel better soon. 1
ElectricStyle Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I call in a lot and something that comforts me is knowing they legally can't question you or deny you if you call in sick. At least in the state where I live, you aren't even legally obligated to give reasoning. So try not to overthink it, especially if you're actually sick. The same company you're worried about wouldn't give a d**n if you dropped dead tomorrow. Take care of yourself. 1
Uncatena Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I didn't even feel bad when I called in sick when I wasn't lmao remember that to your boss, you are a replaceable workforce, and that this feeling of guilt is the endstage dystopian capitalist system working its way into your brain. don't ever let that **** win. 2
RoseGold Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Think of it like this: Will your boss feel guilty if they were to fire you or lay you off? Prolly not. 4
mike_int Posted November 26 Posted November 26 If you don't change your attitude towards work this capitalistic machine will eat you up
Thin White Duke Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I know the feeling. I can really respect a workcoholic, despite all the complaining that people nowadays do, wanting to work hard is an admirable quality and generally makes you feel fulfilled. But we are all human after all and should take a break sometimes, especially when you're sick. Learned that the hard way I hope you feel better soon, get some rest!
