Are you? I am I fear.

Perfectionism is a personality trait that involves:

  • Striving for flawlessness and perfection
  • Having high standards for oneself or others
  • Being critical of oneself or others
  • Having difficulty seeing situations in perspective
  • Overcompensating to ensure nothing goes wrong
  • Excessive checking and reassurance seeking
  • Excessive organizing and list making
  • Procrastination
  • Avoiding doing something altogether

There are three types of perfectionism:

  • Self-oriented
    • Having unrealistic expectations for oneself, holding oneself to perfect standards, and being hard on oneself when expectations aren't met
  • Other-oriented
    • Having unrealistic expectations for others, holding others to perfect standards, and being hard on others when expectations aren't met
  • Socially-prescribed
    • Believing that others have unrealistic expectations for you, that others are holding you to perfect standards, and that others will be critical of you when expectations aren't me

yes, it's kind of a blessing and a curse for me. on the one hand i am proud of my work ethic and attention to detail, i end up getting promoted quickly and i feel it's an important part of who i am. on the other hand it's really limited the ability for me to have a life outside of school or work because procrastination (out of fear of failure) swallows up a lot of time :doc:

I think I inherited OCD/OCPD in a way, and I hope one day it will not be such a strain on me. Not to assume the preferences of people here but it seems more prevalent in the queer community???

Yes, but I'm trying to keep it in check and not put so much pressure on myself to perform at work. Cause, at least in my industry, good work is just rewarded with more work. I'd rather be "alright" and have my mental health intact than be "high-performing" and miserable. I make sure to miss a few deadlines here and there and don't automatically say yes to every single thing I know I'm capable of
