PillowCase Posted November 24 Posted November 24 The currency in USA, UK, canada, Australia, New Zealand and others is tens to hundred times maybe even thousands times worth than those of some 3rd world countries. Like, a year's worth of work in the US making 60k could get you a sick house, a sweet car, and still have money left over. Why don't more people just move there? I mean, life in a third-world country isn't always easy. But even there, there's always a plaftorm for the rich folk have their own little world, where they significantly stick out from the average people.
brazil Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Because people need to stay where their salaries are lol. Unless you're talking about retired people in that case they do, there are millions of Americans in Mexico for example. 1

While it doesn't go far in Germany, you can get by on it in many other countries.
JO1s Posted November 24 Posted November 24 They literally do, there's hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who either retired after working in a first world country to a poorer country or people who work remotely for US companies. 8

Alongoria13 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Mexico is infested by remote workers from the US though? Tho I wouldn't call the US a first world nation anymore xx 2 3
St. Charles Posted November 24 Posted November 24 I thought they did? And it drives up the cost of living and forces local people out, leading to entire economies of cities that are sustained by tourism and foreign dollars. 3
VelvetCrush Posted November 24 Posted November 24 People tend to care for having friends and family around 3
Wicked Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Might sound corny but I'd rather thug it out with my working salary in the country my family has been in for 400 years.

rhaenyra Posted November 24 Posted November 24 People have been doing that a lot tho wym There's been a lot of people not just from North and South America, but also people from Europe choosing to live in South East Asia bc of those exact reasons. Like in Philippines for example Cost of living is much cheaper, fresh produce is of great abundance and food lack all of the preservatives, etc 1
aotearoa Posted November 24 Posted November 24 They do... americans are living in mexico, australians are living in thailand, etc
LittleCupid Posted November 24 Posted November 24 There are so many fat Americans that flock to South East Asian countries (specifically Thailand) for a cheaper cost of living. I hear they're doing it in Mexico too. 3
Illuminati Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Some people who work from home/remotely do actually move to live in places where it's cheaper. Whether it's outside the city, a different state or somewhere in East Europe. It also goes the other way around, people go to work in larger cities or wealthier countries but don't live there.
piotrert Posted November 24 Posted November 24 imagine americans living in country where they have to walk to do groceries and not use a car 10
Sugar-Rush Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Third world countries are often more dangerous than first world countries, so there's an issue of safety. Also the language barrier.
Popboi. Posted November 24 Posted November 24 Good luck finding a job that will pay similar to the one in US etc. It is cheaper, but you'll earn considerably less, unless your investment is fully installed in the country of origin and doesn't need you to be there (something many celebs and business people do to have some peace and quiet).
Gesamtkunstwerk Posted November 24 Posted November 24 1. They do, a lot of people are working remotely in "cheaper" countries 2. Many people work jobs that aren't possible to do remotely 3. If working locally, depending on the country, you have to have a very well paid job to maintain the same living standard, many things that are "normal" 1st word countries, are "luxuries" in 3rd world countries because of the cost 4. Moving away from family and friends isn't of most peoples interest
Rep2000 Posted November 24 Posted November 24 wtf do you mean they don't? "Digital nomads" and retired men are plagues out here in 3rd world countries.
My Tears Ricochet Posted November 24 Posted November 24 What about family and friends? Why would someone abandon everything to live somewhere cheaper?
constantinople Posted November 24 Posted November 24 using "third world countries" in 2024... me when my brain is completely liquified 2
Colmillo Posted November 24 Posted November 24 These ******* gringos already do, they come here and make things like rent more expensive and now the locals can't afford it, they also only speak English and are not bothered to learn even the basics of Spanish, and they're also annoyed by the culture of the country and complain about it on TikTok, and since they're "digital nomads" they don't even pay taxes here, so I say that these ******* gringos need to GO BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY WHERE THEY BELONG!!! deport them all. 4 1
Archetype Posted November 24 Posted November 24 4 minutes ago, Colmillo said: they don't even pay taxes here Ironically they probably pay more in taxes on just their daily purchases in a few months than most locals pay taxes on everything, including their salary, within an entire year. Your government sees them as an easy and fast way to make money… If you're talking about CDMX, I do agree with you tho. You have a plague of digital nomads who should be living in Lomas, Polanco, Santa Fe, San Angel, Pedregal, etc based on their salaries alone, but they choose to move to neighborhoods where locals live to save massively on rent, which makes life much more difficult for locals. Your government is purely to blame for this, as they actually encourage services like AirBnb to take over and renovate buildings in those neighborhoods. Most cities are doing the opposite and have heavily restricted services like AirBnb. @OP Yes, people do this very often. It's just that they don't want to move to somewhere that has bad infrastructure, intense political instability, major safety issues, water scarcity, a prevalence of mosquito-born diseases, etc. That's why rapidly developing countries are more popular, as they are still very affordable but typically have world-class developed cities with amenities and security that you find in most "first-world" cities. 1
BrokenMachine Posted November 24 Posted November 24 (edited) But they already do? It's a whole community decided to gentrify every single nice place in third world countries, while calling themselves 'ex-pats' instead of the 'inmigrants' that they are Edited November 24 by BrokenMachine 3
