I believe the connection is that Scooter is friends with either John Chu or John Chu's wife and thus he was always going to be invited on set. Ariana probably stayed with him as her manager for as long as she did - despite us knowing she originally tried leaving him and something happened that gave her pause - because he likely told her he could ruin her acting dreams if she crossed him. 

 

There's a reason why she ended her professional relationship with him the moment everything on Wicked finally wrapped.
