I didn't get it

Joan Crawford asked to accept the award on Anne's behalf because Joan got snubbed in the Best Supporting Actress category and she wanted to spite Bette Davis who was in the running for a Best Actress win. Joan and Bette both were infamous Hollywood rivals who starred in the same movie together to revitalize both of their careers but Joan was jealous that most of the limelight landed on Bette. This was a supreme level of petty that no one today is ever capable of pulling.

On another note, I'd love to see a similar rival collaboration like this happen again one day. Something like Madonna x Janet or Madonna x Mariah together would probably be an equivalent.

Bette was still angry years later, saying that Joan sabotaged her win behind the scenes, which made the 1963 Oscars shade even more epic.

I don't get the 3 reasons. What do those men have to do with the feud?

...but who's on the receiving end of the shade? Judging by what you said, it seems that Joan was a loser from all povs so how exactly did she one up her rival by accepting an award on someone else's behalf? If anything, it was even more embarrassing for her.

The fact that they were even slated to work together again for another film but Joan dropped out halfway in and Olivia de Havilland replaced her and it became another critical/commercial success :dies:

I believe there was lots of hype surrounding Bette's nomination because if she were to win, she'd be the first with 3 Best Actress Oscars. Joan was shut out and had nothing to lose at that point, so what better way to get back at Bette than to accept the Oscar that her rival lost out to? It doesn't look good on Joan but it's crazy to see the extremes she went through to make sure this scenario happened, including spreading gossip about Bette and asking all the other Best Actress nominees if she could step in and accept their win for them.

ATRL Equivalent: Taylor loses out to her 5th AOTY Grammy and Kim Kardashian accepts it on behalf of the winner :gaycat6:

It's a long story of jealousy and rivalry between Joan and Bette that culminated in the 1963 Oscars, if anyone wants the full story there is a series called Feud that explains everything.

The Feud miniseries does a great job of retelling the history between the two actresses that the studios constantly pitted against each other for headlines.

The movie they ended up making together is also so good - very jarring to see two Classic Hollywood icons reinvent themselves in a psychological horror film. It would've been a well deserved Oscar win for Bette had she won. The absolute tension and disdain they have for each other in each scene is so palpable

I might check it out, suddenly I'm interested in all the drama.

Sorry but the way these two absolutely dragged eachother over the course of decades. :rip:

Joan Crawford: "Miss Davis was always partial to covering up her face in motion pictures. She called it art. Others might call it camouflage... a cover-up for the absence of real beauty."

Bette Davis: "Joan has has slept with every male star at MGM except Lassie."

Yes. It alongside the preceding drama is so iconic that it had to be made into Feud (which was great). :jonnycat:

I'm not educated enough on these divas, but I always feel like I gravitate towards Bettie the most.
