Virgos Groove Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Quote Farmers are protesting in Westminster over inheritance tax changes announced in the Budget, as the row grows over how many farms it might affect From April 2026, inherited agricultural assets worth more than £1m, which were previously exempt, will be liable to the tax at 20% - half the usual rate Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he understands their concerns, but has insisted the "vast majority" of farms will be unaffected The National Farmers' Union calls the move "disastrous", while presenter-turned-farmer Jeremy Clarkson says at the rally it will be the "end of farming" The largest estimate suggests 70,000 farms could be affected overall, but the annual sum is likely to be around 500 - BBC Verify has crunched the numbers BBC News Quote Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced at last month's Budget farms worth more than £1million will be now subject to inheritance tax. Previously farming businesses qualified for 100% relief - paying zero inheritance tax. Since 1984 landowners have been able to pass this on without being hit. But now the tax is being imposed on farms worth more than £1 million, with an effective tax rate of 20% on assets above the threshold. This is less than the standard 40% rate. It is claimed that the actual threshold before paying inheritance tax could be as much as £3 million, once exemptions for each partner in a couple and for the farm property are taken into account. The Government says around 500 claims a year are expected to be affected - but this The Mirror Mind you, Clarkson never kept it secret or anything that he only bought the farm to avoid taxes. (at 1:52) I always preferred James May.
family.guy123 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Inheritance tax is such BS. Makes it impossible to get ahead
Gelato Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago multimillionaire landowners mad that their special treatment has been slightly reduced
visions Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Is it true 40% of farmland in the UK is owned by billionaires? It was apparently the easiest way to leave tax free inheritance to their kids. But then again if the majority of farmers have to pay a large sum of tax every year they'll end up selling the land to those billionaires and just live off the money they get from the sale and billionaires still win. Surely there has to be a way to implement something where asset rich farms who are taking in less than 100k a year (and can't really afford to pay heavy inheritance tax) don't have the same tax laws as billionaires hoarding land as a tax haven.
