Denzel Washington on US politics: "You're being manipulated by both" sides

The two-time Oscar-winning actor, who stars in Ridley Scott's upcoming Gladiator II, was recently asked about the 2024 presidential election, which saw Donald Trump defeat Kamala Harris earlier this month. During his interview with The Sunday Times, editor Jonathan Dean also noted a specific line in Gladiator II that felt timely given the election: "Empires fall, so do emperors."

"You know, it's so easy to stand outside America and say this and that," Washington, 69, said in response. "Turn around, you know? Pick a country. Any one."

"But listen," the Training Day actor continued. "It's all politics. All promises unkept. And now with the information age the way it is — if anything — left, right, whatever had better learn how to use those tools to manipulate the people. There was a great line in the first movie I did, [1981's] Carbon Copy: 'Power to the people? Yeah, they had it once — it was called the Stone Age.'"

"We're all slaves to information now. We really are. We're all slaves. So whatever you feel about the leaders, like this guy's crazy or the other one is sane, you'd better realize you're being manipulated by both sides. Period," Washington added. "Yeah. So go to the movies."

I mean he is right

The right manipulates people with religion and the left manipulates people with identity

But both sides of the political spectrum operate in a very similar way

That's why sometimes people who go far deep into the left sound exactly the same as someone in the right

I'm personally apolitical but if i have to take a side it would be the left since my morals align more there

It's camp.

But lowkey he's right. It is all manipulation and radicalization and there is next to nothing the ordinary citizen can do about it, and we'd probably all be less stressed and less susceptible to manipulation if we disengaged. Going to the movies isn't necessarily the best example, considering Hollywood is part of the manipulation and so much of what the Republicans have radicalized against is driven moreso by Hollywood than it is by DC, but I think the sentiment is there.

Well, he is right. The state as an institution is inherently right-wing by default. Having to choose between the right-wing party and the um... less right-wing party is not much of a choice now is it? Why is that? Hmm. The state's purpose is to create and maintain class division, which is why things have been and will keep getting worse for us (unless you are rich I guess) while they are ruling. They (as in the nation states) were never meant to serve the people; they are an integral part of the capitalist apparatus. They cannot be ''fixed'' in order to work for the working class because that goes against their very essence. They will never work for the people. History has showed us this time and time again. And yes, this goes for all of them.

I'm glad we have people with a platform such as his resisting liberals' kool aid still. Our coward faves should take notes! Free Palestine.

He's always been a very intelligent man. And a real one. Good for him, even though unfortunately, it's gonna fall on deaf ears.

Of course we are.

In the last four years alone, the Dems told us staunchly that Biden was experiencing no cognitive decline whatsoever, he was as fit as a fiddle and ready to run in 2024 baby! Then we all see him on live TV and he's one sentence away from drooling.

Or how about during Covid, putting the idea out there that it might have escaped from the one lab in the one city in the world where it was being studied, made you a far right conspiracy theorist? And this from the people who have "Science is Real" signs in their windows. :rip:

Yes, both parties manipulate you.

Hmmmm what? No

I have never said I'm black

I was definitely more conservative leaning when I joined as a teen but changed over time.

You got the wrong guy

Denzel has been wealthy for nearly 40 years. He hasn't auditioned for a movie role in 40 years. He, like Whoopi who also made some ignorant comments this year, are so far removed from society. They truly think that because they made it, anyone can. Thats not the case
