Police chief advises Jews and homosexuals in parts of Berlin to be more cautious

Berlin's police chief Barbara Slowik has advised Jews and homosexuals to be especially careful in certain areas of the capital.

In principle, there are no so-called no-go areas, i.e. areas that are too dangerous to enter. "However, there are areas - and we have to be so honest at this point - I would advise people who wear a kippah or are gay or lesbian to be more attentive," Slowik told the "Berliner Zeitung" .

"Fear and worry remain"

She does not want to "defame" a certain group of people as perpetrators, said Slowik: "Unfortunately, there are certain neighborhoods in which the majority of Arab people live, who also have sympathy for terrorist groups. Open hostility to Jews is articulated there against people of Jewish faith and origin.

Slowik continued: "Fortunately, the violent crimes against Jewish people are low, although without question every act is one too many. That fear and worry remain, I can still understand." People from the Jewish-Israeli community in Berlin would perceive the total number of anti-Semitic crimes. Since the 7th October 2023, the day of the Hamas attack on Israel, the police initiated more than 6,200 investigations into anti-Semitism and sedition. This understandably increases the fear within the community of being the target of an attack.

A large part of the investigations dealt with hate posts on the Internet, as well as property damage and propaganda crimes. 1300 investigations into acts of violence are mostly about attacks or resistance to police officers during demonstrations.

More and more arab people are moving there and they are notoriously anti-gay. I'm assuming that is what she is implying here.

This is just propaganda. Germany is notoriously for semitism. The state of Berlin just targeted Israeli and Palestinian civilian filmmakers because they made a call for peace months ago. As a foreigner who lives in Germany, I am advising foreigners to be more cautious, especially if you have a darker skin.

Hmm I wonder why

Germany is so deeply unserious. An antisemitic and homophobic Nazi party is polling at 20% but yeah it's the Muslims that are the existential threat to gays and Jews :rip:

There is "low" amount of violence - how much is it actually?

Can Slowick actually say how many of the 6.2K investigations into antisemitism actually resulted in charges? This year the Berlin police banned people speaking in Irish for fear of antisemitism. Is a man speaking Irish considered an Antisemitism investigation?

Well, you are probably one of the few who feels that way. You couldn't pay me going to Neukölln one more time again

The left must address these issues and present solutions. You can't pretend that there isn't a problem. Unfortunately, I still find our country far too soft when it comes to criminality. Hate against minorities should not be tolerated and should be severely punished.

Most of the Nazis were only let go during the Nuremberg trials btw. Only top level ones were convicted because they realise it was too many to handle.

Today, their descendants have become the AfD and you have these kind of things going on.

Arabs may be an issue but you're overlooking the bigger elephant in the room.

Not disagreeing but is it not possible to just acknowledge that both native Germans and Muslims can be violently homophoic?

You have no idea what you are talking about. The descendants of Nazis literally vote for all parties here.

Some of you really should't be talking when you have no clue.

Neither the AFD nor homophobia or anti semitism is going away with outlandish generalisations like these, but maybe that's a bit too nuanced for some of y'all

Sad that it has come to this. There are similar developments in certain districts of Vienna, and I'm sure in a number of other European cities as well. It would obviously be wrong to blame Arabs/Muslims/immigrants as a whole (and I think the police chief is aware of that, hence why she worded it somewhat vaguely), but those among them who are violently homophobic or anti-Semitic need to be taken seriously and be dealt with accordingly. Politics has turned a blind eye on this issue for too long, perhaps out of fear of offending someone or being seen as "intolerant".

I stayed in Neukölln this summer and it was so fun. I went in my Kit Kat outfit into a baklava store and literally no one cared

Straight people should be banned from using the word "homosexuals" ever again. It reads like a slur tbh

Of course it is possible to acknowledge that any group can be violently homophobic. Can you give me some examples of German Muslims being violently homophobic though or are you just assuming based on vibes?

LGBT activists in Germany are noting a rise in homophobic attacks are linked to the rise in far-right politics.

I would love to hear the Berlin Chief of Police make a statement on far right violence against gays, Jews (and Muslims!). Can you find me a statement that Barbara Slowick made about that?
