The way I see it is the same as when a racist gets called out. They know they are one and are happy to hold the views that they do but won't ever admit of being racist bc they know that the word has a  negative connotation and won't be a good look on them. Instead, they'll try to frame their bias as them being "logical" or "objective".

Sadly it's not as common knowledge as you might think. This rhetoric and these falsehoods may seem heavy-handed to you and to me but it's surprisingly effective on the whole. Especially when it comes to the ADL, which is still regarded as one of the premier authorities on anti-Semitism (and therefore whose every word is still uncritically echoed by nearly every mainstream western publication like the NYT)
