Why Toxic wasn't a lead single?

Recommended Posts

i just can't imagine what the process thinking was, you have TOXIC, like a pop masterpiece but then decide to just go with another song?

don't get me wrong, i really like the first single but i'm curious

was there any particular reason toxic was delegated as a second single?

Cause Madonna was on the lead? lol

Cuz britney got madonna on me against the music, it was a big deal cuz britney loved madonna, it was the first time madonna had EVER collabed on someone elses song, the vma kiss had happened so it made sense to continue the hype from that by releasing a song with M and britney just really liked the song and she wanted it to be the lead.

Jive actually originally wanted Outrageous for the lead, and wanted I Got That Boom Boom as a single too. The reason being that they were on-trend at the time with their hip hop influence. Pure pop wasn't at its peak popularity wise.

Britney pushed for Me Against The Music, probably because of its danceable rhythm and the Madonna feature which was added later in the process. Britney also pushed for Toxic as second single.

MATM was the ideal lead single choice at the time. However, many people here wouldn't know this since they love to blindly hate on Britney, but she fought with her label to make Toxic a single. Her team wanted to promote Boom Boom or Outrageous, I think.

She did but the knee injury happened which halted the ITZ era :/

Britney already wanted MATM as the lead before Madonna was added. She explained this how she played it for Madonna for advice and Madonna liked it and asked if it was her first single. Then Britney asked her to be on the song.

I swear I remember that Shadow was considered for the lead single too.

Britney always wanted MATM as the lead. Apparently Madonna heard the song during rehearsals for the VMA: and asked her was it going to be her lead single and Britney said 'hopefully'. That's when Madonna wanted to be on the single and Juve finally

backed her up in it. They originally wanted 'Outrageous'.

Britney pushing her label to release Toxic as a single was so smart. It aged so well because it doesn't sound like any music from that time period. People need to give Britney a lot more credit for her insight!

Bc they needed to start the era with massive buzz and shock value (aka a Madonna collab) after the Britney singles bombed. Only for it to bomb even harder but alas :rip:

I read once that when the tracklist was finalized, it was down to Shadow vs Get It (which eventually leaked online) and Britney chose Shadow over it.

Britney also had Breathe On Me on her shortlist as well while Jive wanted Boom Boom.

That era was such a mess behind the scenes

Technically Prince has vocals on a track from Like A Prayer but in terms of official credits on a track title, yeah MATM was the first one (Missy Elliott collab came up within weeks after this)

Her taste was always such a slay. We probably would have gotten a Breathe On Me release if it wasn't for injury she suffered on the Outrageous video. Though at the same time she seemed over the era at that point.

Jive wanted the more urban sounding tracks as the singles. Britney wanted Toxic but when she got Madonna to feature on MATM the label was on board to do that instead.

Then got Toxic and Everytime as second and third single. So in the end Britney won, it was the era she was most in control of and arguably her best album :gaycat2:

I think Larry and the rest of her team & Jive, probably thought it would be lucrative to pick Me Against the Music since it featured Madonna.   Don't forget she was just coming off of the heels of the tabloid mess about the VMA kiss they had.   That's the thing that really has frustrated me, her team really didn't make the smartest initial decisions.   She fought really hard to have Toxic even be a single, and look how it turned out.   Highest peaking single from the era, won a Grammy, pushed ITZ to sale more.    Britney always wins in the end and tbh I want her to win at life even if that means removing that current sealed card plan, something still not right yall.

Like... also it was more radio friendly for US at the time, not that it mattered anyways as both of them were basically blacklisted by most stations :toofunny3:
