With over 10 million followers on X, The Guardian has decided to pull the plug on the platform, formerly known as Twitter. The Guardian describes X as a 'toxic media platform' filled with 'far-right conspiracy theories and racism.

"We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter). We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere."

This is something we have been considering for a while given the often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism. The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse.

With thousands of X users migrating to Bluesky following the U.S. election, will you be leaving the toxic platform as well?

crazy to think i've never come across problematic content on my main on X, my algo is so perfectly curated it never shows me any politics or questionable content and when it rarely does, i click "don't show me this" and problem solved

Yes, you can ignore it. But it doesn't change the fact that it exists and influences millions of people. I've seen a lot of disgusting homophobic comments on Twitter. The problem is also that Musk owns the site and the Guardian is right when it says that Musk uses the site to influence people politically. I've seen people who were normal become very right-wing and homophobic because of users like "Endwokeness".

No matter how perfectly curated your timeline is, using it would still make you complicit to Elon's donations to Trump campaign. Not to mention his new political role in Trump's administration.

i actually have the opposite effect. i interact with alot of leftist & stan twitter content, yet far right propaganda is still being shoved down my feed. no matter how many times i've pressed don't show me this.
