I think the idea behind it is that "Shawn Mendes" the album is his poppiest album and this album just "Shawn" is his most stripped back album

I've had it with artists and their fans pretending self titled albums are deep, profound and personal. Just say you didn't know what else to call it and you were feeling lazy next time. I'd appreciate the honesty more than this pretentious placing of meanings where they don't exist. 
 

Shawn always makes the most boring and safest choices imaginable for his career. His refusal to take any risks is a big reason his career is where it's at nowadays. He doesn't show any desire to grow or evolve.
