"Movie musicals can be tricky. When they're done poorly we get made fun of and we should because if they're not great, it's not great."

Is she talking about FAD? :dies:

Dear Evan Hansen, Cats, Into the Woods, Last Five Years, and In the Heights all did abysmally, to the point that I'm surprised Wicked even made it into production.

I'm sure with her Broadway background she was speaking about those ^ and not… a Joker film?

Meryl's Into the Woods:

Budget$50 million[3]

Box office$213.1 million[4]

It remains culturally irrelevant tho :michael:

I also forgot the tragic Les Miserables adaption that nearly ruined Anne Hathaway's career :deadbanana4:

The only movie musical we actually need is Hamilton (and selfishly I would love Next to Normal and Spring Awakening :lakitu:)

Idk I doubt she's referring to Joker 2 since that wasn't an IP that was originally a musical in the first place. It failed because it was a bad movie first and foremost. She's probably referring to recent musical-movie adaptations of Broadway shows like Cats which was so infamously terrible that people still bring it up years later to discredit musical-movie adaptations. It was a disservice to the original stage musical and tbh probably shouldn't have been adapted for the screen - it just doesn't translate to film at all.

I'd think as a broadway star, she's most likely referring to popular musicals that were adapted to film, and not whatever JFAD was.

But literacy and comprehension levels are allegedly dropping, so it's understandable.

FAD parodied Broadway, not emulate it. Not sure why she would be referring to it.
