Julia Fox Posted November 5 Posted November 5 The way she debuted with clever, quirky, honest, catchy and relatable lyrics on her debut and then never reached that level on the next albums and now the girl who wrote "Thinking Of You", "Waking Up In Vegas", "Lost", "Self Inflicted" or "I'm Still Breathing". What happened?

Arthoe Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Thinking Of You is objectively a great song and probably Katy's best. 3
EnigmaticAndroid Posted November 5 Posted November 5 (edited) Yes! The storytelling and emotional layers on the title track The heart and soul in Thinking of You The perfectly pop, silly lyrics and images in Waking Up in Vegas The wordplay of Mannequin Edited November 5 by EnigmaticAndroid
Bubble Tea Posted November 5 Posted November 5 She definitely had some fantastic writing on OOTB. IDK if I could say if it was better than TD, Bonnie Katy's pen really was at WORK on Teenage Dream. So many great CLASSIC lyrics. "Pictures of last night ended up online, I'm screwed, oh well." "You think I'm pretty without any makeup on, you think I'm funny when I tell the punch line wrong" "You can travel the world, but nothing comes close to the golden coast" Like come on

psychodiva336 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 That's true. "Thinking of You" and especially "I'm Still Breathing" (my personal favorite) always send chills over my entire body and make me feel depressed because of how beautiful and soul crushing the lyrics are. The way she conveys emotions is just unmatched by anything she really put out ever since... I mean come on. THIS is how you do a "we're losing each other" breakup song: I leave the gas on, walk the alleys in the dark Sleep with candles burning, I leave the door unlocked I'm weaving a rope and running all the red lights Did I get your attention? 'Cause I'm sending all the signs that The clock is ticking and I'll be giving my two weeks Pick your favorite shade of black, you'd best prepare a speech Say something funny, say something sweet But don't say that you loved me 2
naval23 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 You're so gay and you don't even like boys was so ahead of its time
naval23 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Thinking of You being a solo written ballad - she really used her pen and gave us excellence

SpaceOddity Posted November 5 Posted November 5 One Of The Boys was her peak lyrically, coming from a singer - songwriter sort of mindset. Teenage Dream was her pop lyricist peak, maximizing her humorous and colorful writing. Everything after is pretty awkward, clunky or downright cheesy. You'd think her pen would get better with time but she's gotten exponentially worse with each album.
UnusualBoy Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Probably, her lyrics started to become simpler and a bit childish during TD and then it got worse.
Gladiator Posted November 5 Posted November 5 I would say so, but a lot of people here pay dust to Witness which also has some great lyricism.
blastoisebaby Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Real - she hasn't beaten TOY, I hoped 143 would've been a return to that sound tbh. I think Halsey is a great example of music aging with the artist

The delusion. 1
l3disko Posted November 5 Posted November 5 How she went from OOTB's brilliance to 341 is just tragic. Gimme, gimme, baby, stop wastin' my time Kitty, kitty, wanna come party tonight Trippy, trippy, daddy, take me on a ride If you want my body, gotta blow my mind
