Why are you comparing their streams when the metric on their hayday was sales and Madonna is the best selling female artist of all time

because the person said Mariah was only known for her xmas songs, while Madonna created everlasting evergreen superhits.

I just proved that Mariah Carey's music is not utterly forgotten, as suggested.

U may agree that she is a "shady Christmas Chanteuse", I do not and reality does not reflect that.

It is somehow chic to claim that Mariah Carey's music is unknown in 2024. And whenever I post Spotify stats and remind people of their deluded BS, it is them attacking me for it?

That's some Kellyanne behaviour.

They both had great output but I put Madonna for albums and Mariah for singles.

The truth is one is still remembered as the pioneer of modern female music and the other one as the whistling shady Christmas chanteuse

Mariah has more influence on the music itself than Madonna simply because she is actually musically talented.

How will Madonna be remembered as the bolded (which I couldn't even bring myself to type out) when she's never even been seen as a legitimate musician? There's a reason that pervasive allegations of talentlessness have plagued her for 40+ years LOL.

Madonna will be remembered for her tendency to shock and polarise the masses by defying social conventions through her music. She will be remembered as the epitome of female pop stardom. She will be remembered as a champion of female autonomy and empowerment. She will not be remembered as a musical force, because she has never been an outstanding musical talent:

- Non-existent vocalist

- Adequate but decidedly unremarkable songwriter

- Questionable instrumentalist

…She's not actually great at any singular thing musically. Never has been.

We make fun of Taylor Swift for being the musical equivalent of Lunchables, but even she has a stronger case for being remembered as a great musician than Madge does lmao.

It would serve Madonna stans enormously to just appreciate her for what she can do and is known for, rather than what she has never been able to do and has never been known for.

Remember kids, a downvote is not a counter-argument!
:ryan3:

The fact that this is objectively true.

What's Madonna's signature sound? What's her impact on music - vocals, melody, people playing instruments?

Obviously Madonna. No paragraphs needed!

This is one of the rare occasions where I simply can't choose. They're both so different you're basically comparing apples and oranges. Ray Of Light is one of my favorite pop albums of all time so I guess I'll go with Madonna but Mariah deserves her flowers. Butterfly, Rainbow and Daydream are classic albums. It is diabolical how the Grammys always did her dirty.

Mariah pretty easily for me. She didn't have a significant dip in quality until 1999. Madonna took more risks, which should be noted... but musically Mariah takes it imo. I'd also argue that 90's Mariah > 90's Madonna influence wise. Mariah's music is responsible for a lot of our biggest stars in the 2000's - 2020's. Strictly speaking musically

Mariah for me personally, but I could agree that Ray of Light is better than any Mariah project.

This is a really tough comparison, but I'd vote Mariah by a hair.
