itshyolee Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Love them down, but their music hasn't hit for me in a while. This sounds like a b-side to Fly Girl.

Minto Posted October 27 Posted October 27 it's not as good as check or bending my rules…..in fact it sounds like a weaker version of check

Odette Violet Posted October 27 Posted October 27 sounds decent. I just got into them, wish them all the success
Doogle Posted October 27 Posted October 27 I don't like their newer direction and miss them just pretending to be a 2000s girl group tbh 1
GloryDays Posted October 27 Posted October 27 I think their older material is better but I've waited so damn long for this debut album that I'll take whatever they release
sam.teas Posted October 27 Posted October 27 track 3 explicit Tayla Parx, Albin Tengblad, Lara Andersson, Grant Boutin & Emma Rosen

They are fumbling the bag (no pun intended) and I'm not sure I see it for them long-term. The Y2K cosplay began to really grind my gears because it was just not authentic. Every interview touting their love for "Brandy, Faith Evans, SWV and similar" does not align with the fact that they were not even born for most of those artists' releases/peaks. Anchoring their music around songs that always sound like "album tracks" on a mid-00s, mid-tier R&B girl's "mid" album is not the move. Cardboard Box remains their best attempt at striking the right balance between the nostalgic and the contemporary. I love Fly Girl and Walk Like This, but it seems the GP sees such songs as a little too on-the-nose/dated. I'd go a step further and say that they aren't doing enough to sonically anchor themselves in the market they are actually most known in (the UK). Their "sound" should really be an amalgamation of songs like Cardboard Box, but crucially "UK-flavoured" songs like Gen-Z Love (Central Cee) and early Misteeq. I will never ever get how artists / producers / teams don't clock the easiest success hack. Simply listen to the top 20-30 songs at that time in one's market and ask the simple question: "would my track fit in that mix"? I get the sense a lot of acts feel like they are reinventing the wheel or doing something iconic by being so nostalgic, but if the answer isn't an easy "yes" to the question above then "Houston, we have a problem". FLO's material, including this meh snippet, is so niche, deep R&B lover ish that I'm not getting how they think it will do much for them commercially. 2 1 1

Especially about making it UK ready. They seem keen on trying to break them everywhere when they don't even have a hit. Personally as a 97 born who loves all the old R&B I didn't even grow up hearing on the radio I think their references are fine but I don't really believe in their convictions. They have a lot of apparent influences but seem a bit confused. They're vocally amazing but need more identity and I think as you said leaning into their UK stuff would benefit them. UK has always had a large overlooked R&B scene and they fill a gap there. They should be working to appeal there primarily and as you said strike a balance between nostalgic and current. I never saw them having much mainstream success for the reason that UK R&B is pretty niche. I feel like they're not working on the right areas but I'm sure they've had tons of label trouble already. I'll root for them anyway but I do think they should've stuck to big hitting singles and saved the more niche R&B for the album tracks and EP B-sides 1
glitch Posted October 27 Posted October 27 When you only debuted in 2022 and people are already saying they prefer your old sound... it's not looking good
Edibles. Posted October 27 Posted October 27 I really am rooting for them, even if some of the songs sound too Tik Tok pandering. I saw them live at Lolla and their after show and they're all so gifted.

I can be quite long-winded (passionately so lol), but you for sure hit the nail on the head overall and especially about them having a lot of external influences and not much organic direction. I have always gotten the sense that, while immensely talented, FLO has been the brainchild of external entities all along (producers, management, label). They are Gen-Z group releasing millennial material. They are dangerously in a zone where they are "new" (remain on the rise), aren't "new" (debuted almost three years ago), but in a way still are "new" (are now just dropping their first album). Audiences are extremely fickle and there is a conscious and subconscious appetite for the "new". So, the girls kinda meandering around for the last three years doesn't bode all that well for their commercial chances IMO. Had we been speaking about them as a solo act (with their trajectory), I'd say they'd be fine to go the niche route. But groups (specifically girl groups) are an expensive venture for labels etc and then there's the personal reality of splitting what probably isn't much $$$ three-ways. I'm trying not to be pessimistic, but something has got to happen for them within the next 6-months to a year (max) or I fear it could it could be a wrap. What I'll never get is why so much $$$ is presumably being spent plunged into working with top US producers, when they could (and should) be cutting the check for the collabs with big local UK acts that could garner them big streams (e.g. Central Cee, Dave, and similar).
Rigalo Posted October 27 Posted October 27 This sounds hot. If Check didn't hit tho idk what will. They need to push that, perform it somewhere, try to make it viral, whatever i honestly appreciate their output lately but it's kinda random. Bending My Rules is a nice song but would never be a hit anywhere. I just don't know what they are going for lol also I need them to release a nice vinyl in the us plssssss xoxo
