.Odyssey. Posted October 21 Posted October 21 All respect to Shakira and all that, but this feels a little....random? She isn't exactly a gay icon. Like, it would have been much more on brand for someone like Beyonce or Gaga (or Britney, though that's never going to happen lol). 2 11

Shakira is highly honored-respected here. She's seen as an artist from a higher level-class-rank to every latino artist. The things she achieved success and artistic wise are hard to match. Americans dont appreciate Madonna enough and her achievements. She should be more praised-loved. And i dont know if youre aware but one of Shakira favorite artist all time is madonna she's one of her main inspirations Edited October 21 by AvadaKedavra 1 1 1

Why Shakira specifically? I know Selena is regarded as one of the biggest female Latino artists of all time -- How does she compare to her, relatively speaking?

Shakira has been huge in Latin America since 1996, so nearly 30 years of popularity. She first got famous as a singer-songwriter Pop/Rock artist actually, and even has Grammys in Rock and Alternative categories. She then morphed and shifted to the Latin Pop that she's globally known for. Like Madonna, she's been able to adapt over time and sustain popularity. Shakira is the best-selling female Latin artist of all time with 95 million records sold. Selena has sold 18 million records. 2

Selena was just starting to get popular but at the time of her death she probably wasn't even top 10 artists in Latin America. 1

Why Shakira specifically? I know Selena is regarded as one of the biggest female Latino artists of all time -- How does she compare to her, relatively speaking? There is no bigger name than Shakira in Latin America. She's listened to by every generation or demographic. She started in the 90s as a singer songwriter type artist in the veins of Alanis Morissette, while always fiddling with multiple genres being incorporated to her art, which set her apart from the rest of the local scene back then. Being known as a songwriter first and foremost, her lyrics resonated a lot with her audience, think of it as some sort of Taylor Swift situation for latin audiences. And it stayed that way until Hips Don't Lie, where she kind of changed it up too much and "lost" some of her original audience, but since she remained fresh and ahead of the curve, she managed to incorporate new, younger audiences along the way so ultimately she continued succeeding. She's that rare type of artist that has a song for everyone. She's been a staple accross many generations while they were growing up, so everyone remembers her music fondly because of it. To put things into context, im about to turn 28 years old, and by the moment i was born Shakira was already among the biggest artists latin music had to offer. She was outselling Thalia and Paulina Rubio who were among the biggest latin pop icons in the region at that moment, and even managed to break into Brazil's market (extremely hard even up to this day for Spanish language latin artists) with her debut single "Estoy Aqui". In fact Shakira's first international tour was in Brazil, due to how massive she had gotten over there so quickly. By the time she attempted to crossover she was one of the most respected musicians accross Latin America, considered to be a great songwriter and musician all accross the board. Which was a rare feat on itself, but even more for a female artist. And when she did in fact crossover to the major markets, she became even more of a treasure for a lot of us. We consider her as some sort of global ambassador for Latin American excellence. Even though some people think her new music is not up to par or that she's a "sellout", they'll still buy tickets to her tour to listen to her gems from back when they liked her output. I mean, her pre-2000s albums, for instance, have better recurrents than a lot of the globally massive stars from that time period. Which says even more when you take a look at other albums from latinos around that time which are almost completely forgotten.
