Taliban begins banning images of living things in some Afghan provinces

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Taliban run-media have stopped showing images of living beings in some Afghan provinces to comply with morality laws, an official confirmed Tuesday.

In August, the country's Vice and Virtue Ministry published laws regulating aspects of everyday life like public transportation, shaving, the media and celebrations reflecting authorities' interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia.

Article 17 bans the publication of images of living beings, sparking concerns about the consequences for Afghan media and press freedom.

A spokesman for the Vice and Virtue Ministry, Saif ul Islam Khyber, said government media in the provinces of Takhar, Maidan Wardak and Kandahar have been advised not to air or show images of anything with a soul — meaning people and animals.

Khyber told The Associated Press a day earlier that the ministry was responsible for implementing the morality laws.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. These people are not normal. Humanity can be so crazy. How can you be so stupid and miserable? I will never understand fascists like the Taliban, Putin etc. Who wants to live in such a world?

This doesn't even have anything to do with Islam :deadbanana4:

The country seems worse off after US invasion. Good job, Bush. Interesting enough the Taliban was also armed by the US in the 80s.

Drawing is of two types:

One is drawing pictures of animate beings . It says in the Sunnah that this is forbidden. It is not permitted to draw anything that depicts animate beings, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, according to the sahih hadith: "Every image maker will be in the Fire." And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers, those who tried to imitate the creation of Allah." And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be told, 'Give life to that which you have created.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed those who consume riba (interest, usury) and those who pay it, and he cursed the image-makers. This indicates that making images is forbidden. The scholars interpreted that as referring to images of animate beings such as animals, people and birds.

Right out of some kind of dystopian novel. Absolutely terrifying that this is happening in 2024.

I fundamentally disagree with it but why can't we just live with the fact that some countries aren't secular and will always enforce their religious beliefs as law? Westerners need to take a break from desperately wanting all cultures and laws to look like theirs.

We need to be able to shift away from the mentality of:

Your country committed genocide and is now actively supporting another one and arresting activists who oppose it. I wouldn't say that's better than banning pictures.

"No, no, we just need to give another trillion to some Afghan warlords and opium dealers. We can't just pull out!!1"

Ironically, had the US not invaded in 2001, the Taliban might've fallen by now. Instead, 200k people wound up dying only for the Taliban to come back stronger than ever. The wonders of "humanitarian intervention"...
