Beyonnaise Posted October 17 Posted October 17 A few years ago I thought wacky conspiracies like covid vaccines being microchips, QAnon, etc. were dangerous, but it was still concentrated among a niche group of cranks and it wasn't worth being doomer'd about. But starting this year I genuinely don't know if we can put the genie back in the bottle. Millions of people think the government installed the two recent hurricanes and literally overpowered the FEMA call lines of people needing aid. Any exposé about a confirmed predator just becomes a witch hunt to link other people to them through flimsy associations and millions of people on TikTok, Facebook and Twitter take it at face value. And AI generated fake videos of things that never happened are fooling millions of gullible people, which is only getting harder to discern each day. How will there be anything tethering us to reality if this keeps escalating 4 2

americanlife Posted October 17 Posted October 17 This is because people decided in 2012 that it would be a genius idea to sign up their grandparents for Facebook. Most misinformation is spread by bots and old people. 4 5
nadiamendell Posted October 17 Posted October 17 (edited) There really need to be repercussions for social media companies that allow shock-and-awe misinformation posts to spread like wildfire. Some individuals I once believed to be rational, educated people are now spouting insane conspiracy theories, and I no longer know how to respond because they've become so gullible. It's clear that even many college-educated individuals aren't required to take classes that teach critical thinking and proper source citation. Edited October 17 by nadiamendell 6
tshwark Posted October 17 Posted October 17 It's not a conspiracy if you have so many people telling their story on video about Diddy, Jay Z, but no one ever paid attention through the years, but now people are simply connecting the dots. 2 2
Baby Dancer Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Remember flat-earthers? People will always believe info that makes them feel comfortable and in control of their lives when faced with things they're powerless against. Don't reason with them, just try to soothe their anxieties.

If U Seek Amy Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Sadly yes. And there is no easy answer to it in America as is. The first amendment will stop any attempts to stifle speech by the government and private entities want engagement for personal gain. And even if we did get around the first amendment then we risk an authoritarian control of truth which also is not good if that rule decides to use it improperly. It should ultimately be up to people to not be as stupid as they are but alas here we are. For some reason the majority of people do not question what they read or watch. Especially in cases where it fits their bias. Couple that with people are taking in information basically 24/7 on electronics their brains are too fried to constantly sort through all of it properly without the brain exhausting. 3

It's deeper than that and needs to be psychologically adressed. I don't know if it's narcissism (they want to believe they are smarter than the world), if it's their way of showing outrage against the system... It needs to be studied because it's a very important threat against humanity. Also the role Internet and social media play in this growing trend, obviously 8

discosean Posted October 17 Posted October 17 My thoughts about the hurricane one are this: if anyone or any organization could create hurricanes, wouldn't they be able to also destroy them or to make them less intense? Theoretically, if anyone could control weather, they could bring rain to drought-stricken areas or destroy the heat domes or extremes. But they can't because there is no such thing.
Orsay Posted October 17 Posted October 17 (edited) Yeah, the internet is breaking everyone's brains and will be the downfall of society, it seems pretty inevitable atp Edited October 17 by Orsay 3

Also, don't believe what's written on a random Twitter/Facebook account or dictate what a random guru says on YouTube. That shows a complete lack of critical thinking and emotional intelligence. Funnily enough, when you debate people like that, they all act defensive and attack you for no reason. Edited October 17 by Princess Aurora 1

Funnily enough, when you debate people like that, they all act defensive and attack you for no reason. I know many people who are very intelligent and yet lack a certain type of cognitive ability to discern what seems false or suspicious from hard data or objective information. They have no issues doing intense and deep research and finding credible sources for their work, but anything outside of work is "They're saying X" or "This genius on YouTube said Y so it must be true", and I'm like… IQ scores are definitely missing a major component of what makes someone intelligent, and it doesn't reflect how or when someone uses their intelligence at levels where it matters. It's difficult to argue with these people because they are so easily fooled and deceived. 2
Magic_boXX Posted October 17 Posted October 17 People put everything as a conspiracy when they cant do their own research from legit sources and understand. Take example UFOS, for years people say "ufos are not real", "the photos are just fake" ect. Fast forward you no have US government officials confirming there is actually UFO'S. Take everything with a grain of salt and do research. Even in science, you have to have multiple peer reviews before you make your conclusion as facts.... Now when it comes to its a conspiracy about governments are trying manipulating the weather is a facts, just research cloud seeding. People fear what they don't know" -Shakira Gypsy

You're so transparent for always trying to target the Carters. RIP Liam but in his situation his ex fiancee was suing him for harrassment and came forward as an alleged victim. No victim has ever come forward about Beyonce and Jay about the things they're being accused of. Jaguar Wright is not a victim, all those other conspiracy theorists are not victims. We should take allegations from alleged victims seriously. Targeting people when no one is saying they're a victim and there's 0 evidence is ridiculous.
