It seems like the music industry crumbled in the 1980s and 1990s + beyond. It's actually the opposite, queen. Record labels used to CLAIM huge sales back then because there was no really comprehensive tracking done and they could get away with inflating figures. Eagles' greatest hits album (one of the all-time best sellers) on Wikipedia even has a blurb dedicated to potentially fraudulent certifications not matching up to sales. Music sales actually skyrocketed in the late 80s through to the 90s with the advent of CD as a format and actual sales tracking coming into play around the same time. 6
AvadaKedavra Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Lmfao i remember how everyone used to talk about this woman in old pop forums in the 2000s and say she was the best selling female in the planet above madonna 5
TipToe Posted October 13 Posted October 13 What are her most recognizable sings, to foreign countries? I only know her by name from reading these big sales claims on online music forums.
Mandalay Posted October 13 Posted October 13 I've always admired those singers from 60s, 70s who are not pitchy. Nana is among the list of internationally known names along with the likes of Lata Mangeshkar from India, Teresa Teng from Taiwan etc.

Madonna has 71 million album sales in the US. Mariah Carey is the best-selling female albums artist in the US and she has 72 million pure albums to her name. The USA is the biggest recorded music market in the world and historically has been thrice as big both population and music sales wise compared to Germany (and this is all of Germany, not just West Germany where Nana Mouskouri had most of her sales). Based on the claims of her selling 50 million albums in Germany alone (a country less than a third of America's size), it would mean that Nana was thrice as popular in Germany as Mariah was in the US. Does that make any sense?

Does that make any sense? You don't even need to put it in those terms. Just pull up the list of best-selling artists in German chart history from Wikipedia. They have the #1 (of all time, mind you) as Herbert Grönemeyer with about 18 million records sold. Miss Nana would have to have sold like... triple the amount of records in Germany as their best-selling artist did for these claims to hold any water Bogus statistics like this spread because nobody challenges them, and they end up getting reported in publications as fact because of that. I'm sure Nana Mouskouri does have millions of records sold to her name, but the claims made about her are so hyperbolic and ridiculous. An artist who's appeal never expanded beyond mainland Europe was not selling 300 million records in any lifetime. That's like Madonna's lifetime total worldwide. Please! 3
smartalek22 Posted October 13 Posted October 13 She's going around at 90 looking like this??? Omfg who is this fountain of youth queen
stevyy Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 In her imperial phase, she sold 10-20 million units annually in Germany.

Démodé Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Meanwhile her voice is unbearable, Greece has so much better vocalists (like Vicky Leandros who also had a career in Germany) Nana was just the only one of them to go international. 1
