  • Pharrell Williams told Zane Lowe's Apple Music interview series that writing "Happy" broke him.

  • Williams said writing "Happy" for "Despicable Me 2" came from a place of sarcasm.

  • He said the song's success made him realize his insignificance in the universe.

"You didn't wake up one morning and decide you were going to make a song about an emotion," Williams said, referring "Happy."

Williams said that he wrote nine songs for the scene in "Despicable Me 2" where Gru is on top of the world after a first date, but his ideas was rejected.

"It was only until you were out of ideas, and you asked yourself a rhetorical question, and you came back with a sarcastic answer, and that's what 'Happy' was," Williams said.

"How do you make a song about a person that's so happy that nothing can bring them down? And I sarcastically answered it and put music to it, and that sarcasm became the song, and that broke me."

Williams said the song's success opened his eyes to his insignificance in the universe.

"It's so crazy for us to think like as individuals, everything comes from us. Your ideas, everything that you get, is coming from a library of existence. Nothing is new under the sun," Williams said, adding that he credits the universe for the success of "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines" too.

I use to be a MASSIVE Neptunes/pharell fan. But the majority of his work after  his work on beyonces self titled has disappointed me.

this song and most of his songs he made with ariana (minus rem that's a masterpiece) were some of the worst songs ever created

It is one of the most shameful pieces of garbage that is considered music. I can't believe Pharrell sold out and bent over to the highest bidder with this one.

What broke me is the pattern of four chords before he starts signing (or anyone else he's producing) in every single song.

music for kids films tend to be overly saccharine & corny but i did like some of the songs he made for for the first despicable me movies as a kid :bird:
