Poland suspending right to asylum amid "hybrid war" with Belarus/Russia

Poland will temporarily bar refugees from claiming asylum in the country after crossing the border from neighboring Belarus, amid warnings that Russia and its allies are using migrants to try to destabilize the EU.

Speaking on Saturday at a meeting of the governing Civic Coalition party, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that a new migration strategy would include "the temporary territorial suspension of the right to asylum."

"I will demand this," insisted Tusk, a former president of the European Council, pre-empting challenges from Brussels over the legality of the move. "I will demand recognition in Europe for this decision."

According to Tusk, the bloc's asylum rights are being actively abused by Belarus and Russia. "This right to asylum is used exactly against the essence of the right to asylum," Tusk said.

Tens of thousands of would-be immigrants, many from the Middle East and Africa, have attempted to cross the border into Poland via Belarus in recent years, with as many as 2,500 reported last month and more than 26,000 so far this year.

The real news here is Poland having 'right to asylum' to begin with. You wouldn't know it from how their government acted in 2015. :rip:

OT: Disgusting decision. Centrist parties keep capitulating to the far-right for meagre electoral gains that'll be wiped away next election cycle anyways.

Good. These counties are basically weaponizing refugees by sending them all to Poland.

You're right about 2015, but Poland has taken in almost a million Ukrainian refugees since 2022, which out of all European countries is only topped in total numbers by Germany (which has more than twice the population of Poland). Do you think it would be better to continue letting Putin & Lukashenko weaponise refugees in order to destabilise the country, and by extension the whole EU?

You're literally just proving my point. :rip: In 2015 and now, refugees were "destabilizing", but in 2022 the whole Western world was willing to make sacrifices to help refugees. I can't qwhite put my finger on it.

Europe should accept those refugees. End of. Lukashenko and Putin, as despicable as they are, aren't plucking them from their home countries. The refugees are coming here to escape war and political repression, or hoping to find economic opportunity.

Well no, but they are actively luring them to Belarus with temporary visas and the false promise of easy entry into the EU (even if they might not be eligible to asylum status) only to then push them towards the border in order to put pressure on Poland and the EU as a whole:

Quote

The European Commission has accused Belarus of luring migrants to Minsk with the false promise of easy entry to the EU.

"Upon arrival they are being pushed to the border..." said EU spokesperson Peter Stano.

Poland and Lithuania have for some months accused the authorities in Belarus of orchestrating the arrival of migrants.

Quote

Both Poland and Lithuania say they've found evidence on migrants they intercepted which shows how Belarusian authorities helped them arrange their journeys to the border.

Quote

Once at the border, some migrants have told the BBC how Belarusian soldiers cut through the border fencing at night time to allow them to cross into Poland.

Accounts given by migrants to NGOs working along the border corroborate media reports that Belarus border guards have been directing people through the forests to the border.

Videos published by Belarusian media have shown Belarusian border guards guiding migrants along a highway towards a forest that runs alongside Poland's border.
