Rachel Berry Posted October 12 Posted October 12 The way I came in ready to see him dragged by the internet only to see for once everyone is agreeing with him. King ate! 1 7
Domination Posted October 12 Posted October 12 He's right but these types of callouts have been dead for like 7 years. 1 1
fememeist Posted October 12 Posted October 12 I'm assuming that other girl is Indian/South Asian, because girl you damn well know better that he didn't mean,"nOt EvEryThinG has To Be TraDitiOnAL 🤪" 1

itshyolee Posted October 12 Posted October 12 He ate. Now he needs to obliterate all the other Caucasians who burned the Tanghulu trend down to the ground with their dumbass concoctions.
commander Posted October 12 Posted October 12 He's right. White straight women and white gays have appropriated boba tea for some reason. The same thing happened with yoga until the practice lost all its spiritual and cultural meaning. But in a hyper capitalist society it's impossible to police and control stuff like this. It's just the way it is. 4
GraceRandolph Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Wasn't he comparing gays to pedos like 4 years ago? He needs to take a seat. 1
aesthetic bih Posted October 12 Posted October 12 I'm cringing at the presenters of the product thinking there's nothing wrong with erasing Asian heritage off of a product that is inherently Asian and trying to make it "better" as if fruit tea with popping pearls is this innovative grounbreaking idea 6

It's no different than Taco Bell making "Mexican food" that appeals to Americans, or products like hummus being sold internationally. 3
fememeist Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Let's be real too, a lot of white people won't try something outside of their cultural norms unless another white person is behind it financially or in other ways. 1
bleuwaffle Posted October 12 Posted October 12 This is an instance where claiming cultural appropriation actually feels correct. There is something slimy about taking something traditional with heritage and claiming your version to be superior. 4
Dolce Vita Posted October 12 Posted October 12 he spilled. them acting like they invented popping boba and claiming it's better 1
Archetype Posted October 12 Posted October 12 (edited) I understand where he is coming from, but no one owns a widely distributed recipe. While it might be insensitive to him personally, I'm not going to stop eating at the Italian restaurant down my street because it's owned by an American with zero lineage to Italy nor stop eating at my favorite Turkish restaurant because the owner is Lebanese with Mexican cooks nor stop buying Italian tomato sauce because tomatoes came from the Americas and not Italy. You can take this very far if you really want to. Also Simu was a consultant, he's already been down this road before. I do disagree fully with any type of superiority complex these two may have, they didn't invent anything new. Just say it's canned Boba fruit tea and get it over with. Bubble Tea Posted October 12 Posted October 12 The irony of Simu claiming boba as an "Asian" drink over and over again when it's specificaly a Taiwanese drink that has been coopted and popularised throughout Asia. Taiwan is already cut off and estranged by most nations thanks to China's endless threats, so other parts of Asia claiming its products as their own has a certain thoughtless and dismissive nuance. It would be like Thailand claiming sushi as an Asian food or Australia claiming schnitzel as a "western" food. It's nonsense. (That's not to say Simu didn't make points about the dumb things those people with the product were saying like "you don't know what's in bubble tea" like uhh it's tea, milk and bubbles made from tapioca. ) 5 1 1
