Most Shocking/Surprising Downfall: Cyndi Lauper vs Paula Abdul vs Katy Perry.

OP didn't even include OOTB to make her downfall more dramatic :rip: she lasted from 2008-2017, which was almost a decade, and even Witness had a top 10 hit along with streaming hits Swish Swish and Bon Appetite.

When it comes to the other two, i'd say Cyndi had the more dramatic fall. Spellbound was still a huge era and spent multiple weeks at #1, along with having two #1 singles and another top 10 hit. That's bigger than most albums tbh and it's not like she tried much after that :michael: On the other hand, True Colors stalled at #4 on the charts and barely lasted in the top 10. On top of that, this girl was literally supposed to outlast Madonna, so the standards were pretty high for her. But I'd definitely say she has a bigger legacy than Paula by far.

Here are the chart runs (only in the top 20 of the Billboard 200) for each sophomore album.

Spellbound: 5-*1*-1-2-2-3-3-4-3-3-3-7-8-9-9-10-12-16-22-24-26-34-31-32-28-26-22-20-21-15-15-15-20-19-20-20 (77 total weeks)

True Colors: 14-13-13-8-5-4-4-7-9-11-13-14-14-14-15-16-16-15-18-20 (44 total weeks on chart)

Paula was being scouted by the Jackson's and choreographing their videos and tours before her debut album came out (which was the original chart record breaker and smasher back then). She was one of the masterminds behind Janet Jackson's enormous breakthrough in the 80's. Cyndi and Katy aren't sitting within 100ft of Paula's dinner table imo.

Cyndi has written a whole ass musical and became the first woman who won her category at Tony. This is definitely a bigger achievement than being a choreographer.

It's Katy but only because she was much bigger than the other two to begin with. OOTB is also missing from the OP so she basically had 3 big eras, no one expected her to fall to the level of irrelevance she's reached with her last couple of eras

Cyndi Lauper had ageism going against her since she debuted at 32 years old, but she made her best work in the 90s with her two albums Hat Full of Stars and Sisters of Avalon

Katy's last hit was 10 years ago yet she managed to score 3 top 10 albums since despite massive hate trains while the other 2 had to live on food stamps after they fell from the top. Let's not.

Katy, cause she was collecting hits after hits after hits, when other MPG at the time like Rihanna even has flop singles in between smash hits (example: Only Girl/WMN//S&M #1 - California King Bed #37 - Man Down #59 - Cheers #7) Katy's only non top 10 singles (pre-Dark Horse) were just Thinking of You #29 and Unconditionally #14

This. She was collecting hits after hits from 2008 to 2014 like crazy. Her downfall feels bigger.

Cyndi the most shocking. Her debut was massive and she had true talent. At the time people thought she was the long term pop star. She's basically Gaga without the comeback.

Paula was always a dancer with no voice it was never a surprise she wouldn't last. Plus she didn't really try to last.

Katy we all knew had a shelf life, in fact I'd argue she took longer to flop then she should have. She arguably exceeded expectations.

In the modern day / in terms of legacy, it has to be Paula.

Tell me why she doesn't have a single song above 100 million streams? Meanwhile Cyndi has 2 classics, 1 above 1 billion and the other at 900 million. I don't think the average person under 40 could name a paula abdul song unless they've watched drag race.
