mons†er Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Quote Today, Vogue announced that the theme for the 2025 Costume Institute show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style". The show takes inspiration from Monica L Miller's 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, in which she explores the figure of the Black dandy. According to Vogue, the exhibit will feature "garments, paintings, photographs, and more – all exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day" and "illustrate how Black people transformed from being enslaved and stylized as luxury items, acquired like any other signifier of wealth and status, to autonomous self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters." Ahead of the announcement, guest curator Miller described Black dandyism as "a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even." https://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/64832/1/the-2025-met-gala-theme-is-superfine-tailoring-black-style-dandyism?amp=1 A great example of Black Dandyism is to look at 'Losing You' by Solange. While I am grateful and excited about the theme, I can only think of this theme going left. The sentiment is great but the execution won't land properly. 4 1
Khal Posted October 9 Posted October 9 It's not like people follow the theme anyway. I'm guessing what will most likely happen is that people will wear black designers/black owned labels, but not pay attention to the actual theme.

Especially Kelis is the reason for him actually changing his style, getting into fashion and being as fashionable as he is. It wild how he has lowkey become a Black Fashion Icon and is given the term designer when he hasn't gone to school for it. 3

It's giving performative fashion. And I guarantee you people will show up in D&G knowing damn well they're racist and prejudice. 1
mathekr Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Good theme and pretty easy to follow. But yeah this will go off the rails easily. Especially now that some very problematic and racist fashion names like D&G and Balenciaga were rehabilitated into these spaces. 1

He is talented music producer and he made lot of iconic songs however what he does for LV is monstrosity. Nothing which came out under his leadership on LV was new or innovative. All he did so far was taking what was already designed, in terms of cuts and prints and turn it into kitch. Changing colors or dimensions of established logos and patterns and slap them on oversize clothing is not designing.
popmusicisdead Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Solange should've been co-chair from that Losing You MV alone. is she a security risk or something? 6
Princess Aurora Posted October 9 Posted October 9 (edited) Interesting style. However, 80% of the guests will miss the point as usual Edited October 9 by Princess Aurora 1

He's just a hypebeast that is light skinned enough and urban enough to appeal to both markets. Nothing he has done has been genuine or innovative. His 'designing' or 'choreographing' is garments is more aligned with a Supreme drop instead of a LVMH show.

"But Pharrell doesn't have talent imo" - that is exactly what I wrote in my post- He doesnt have talent to be fashion designer
