Nicole Kidman & Kirsten Dunst praised; Emma Stone & Natalie dragged for hypocrisy

Film Twitter has lauded Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst for their tangible support of female directors, consistently collaborating with them and championing their voices.

Their proactive efforts have contributed to making female-led projects more common in Hollywood. In contrast, actresses like Emma Stone and Natalie Portman have faced criticism for perceived hypocrisy. Despite voicing concerns over the lack of female directors during awards shows, they have not matched that advocacy with substantial collaborations with women directors.

This discrepancy has not gone unnoticed, with many fans pointing out the gap between their words and actions. The backlash highlights a growing demand for consistency between activism and career choices in Hollywood.

The mid 2010s was such a wild time for performance feminism.

Natalie could definitely be better about working with more female directors (to be honest she's not nearly as prolific as she used to be), but it should be noted she tried to bring Lynne Ramsay on for Jane Got A Gun and things ended pretty disastrously; I remember reading an interview where she said the experience really discouraged her from producing for awhile. It's only recently she's become more active in getting projects off the ground, like May December which was a script by a first time female writer that she brought to Todd Haynes (the right choice). Lady in the Lake was created and directed by Alma Har'el so at least she's working at it. I feel like I've heard more from her and the female soccer team she's been championing and getting involved with than a lot of her film work lol :rip:

Emma Stone clearly feels safe and inspired working with Yorgos based on the type of work they do together which is rare in the film industry; I'm sure she just wants to keep going but it would be nice for her to start throwing her weight behind female directors since she's leveled up in terms of how she's looked at in the industry.

Love to Kiki, she's very consistent and has stayed true to herself her whole career. Nicole Kidman really is the goat on this though; in general she takes the most risks out of a lot of actresses in her caliber.

I don't think this is fair to Emma. She's actually always been a staunch advocate for female directors. Here's just one example, which I'm assuming is what the tweet is referring to. But I've also seen her discuss women in film in Variety round tables and actors-on-actors.

I think she's simply found a great creative partnership with Yorgos Lanthimos. Keep in mind, she has her own production company, so her involvement in his films is much more than her being a dance-monkey or a puppet-on-a-string.

I remember an interview where she said she was a huge fan of Cameron Crowe, and then she worked with him on 'Aloha' and received the biggest backlash of her entire career.

My point being — if you form an incredible creative connection with someone, and you keep wanting to go back to them, you shouldn't let their genitals determine your decision. If you make great work together, of course you'll keep going back to them. Especially when another director (Cameron Crowe) who you used to love resulted in a disaster. It's comforting to keep working with a collaborator who you know will make great work.

I can definitely see her working with Greta Gerwig or Emerald Fennell in the future, but I don't think her friendship and career partnership with a man automatically warrants discourse on internalised misogyny…

Tell me why, when looking at the disproportionate ratio of female directors, we've found a way to blame actresses/women.

This isn't an actress problem. This is a male-studio-executives problem.

Cate Blanchett too. She works with Woody Allen but say no to female filmmakers

Cate only cares about which projects could bring her more awards and money (Borderlands). A fake feminist

Having their own production companies, Emma and Natalie are studio executives themselves though. Just because they're women doesn't mean they can't be part of the problem. If they choose to predominately hire more male directors then that's fine. But it does make their comments on the lack of female directors seem hypocritical and performative. They are part of the elite few (regardless of gender) who have the ability to hire more female directors but are choosing to stick closer to the status quo.

Well emma is chasing the acclaim moreso than chasing a female director

Add Jennifer Lawrence to the list of actresses who walk the walk and not just talk the talk. She has worked with several female directors and is currently shooting one with Lynne Ramsay right now.

Her and Kate Winslet are the biggest hypocrites of film. The Academy should revoke their Oscars and give it to the rightful winner… Ms Angelina Jolie
