bdfjfjjddj @Biden my mail-in ballot is on my work desk right now. Tell Cardona to wipe that $20,000 right now before any other crazy Republicans can file suit and my hand will pick up this pen. :jonny6:

Wait so can we apply for forgiveness again? When I was negotiating my loans with the provider they told me there was a halt on forgiveness so I couldn't enroll in it yet. Same with payment by income. My debt's not that much (28k) but if he can swipe 20k away that'd be nice :jonnykin:

Wait, how much is a big debt then because this sounds like a **** ton??

Does this mean that if I had already applied and been approved I will get it? If I have to now apply again I would not qualify due to my salary in the last two years.

The Judiciary of the US is such a ******* mess. A judge can overrule another judge? Is that the case here?

If so, they better get on this ASAP lol.

28k for college being "not that much"... do you get some gold-lavished lavatories and personal butlers at least? :hoetenks:

I spent €2k on my degree and already felt it was too much. I can't imagine having to spend $20k+.

I spent €2k on my degree and already felt it was too much. I can't imagine having to spend $20k+.

Instead of regulating even public colleges on how much tuition can be, Obama did the neoliberal thing of subsidizing costs without price controls.

So Obama's legacy was increasing the amount of Pell Grants poor students could have access to, but a lot of universities that targeted poor students and first-generation students ended up just increasing how much they charge for tuition. This was basically the same issue with the subprime mortgage bubble that happened.

You give people who didn't previously have access now proximity to access, get them into debt, etc. and then there's financial fallout.

Let me be careful not to doxx myself but the college I went to was $22k a year for in-state tuition and that was even a public university and in-state tuition.

And then the financial aid office brings you in and explains your aid package is x amount and how they can help you apply for the loans to make it whole.

And so you're 18. A first-gen student. So I inherently trusted the financial aid office. They work with the Department of Education to set-up these loans and paperwork.

They'll tell you: "The federal government is giving you $5k, you get another $7k from us in academic scholarships, and look! You just need $10k in loans to make you whole! Over half of tuition is already covered!". And you think "oh wow, this is so generous, I won't get this chance again...". I remember my financial aid officer telling my mom* to apply for a Parent Plus loan cause her getting denied would increase the amount I could borrow, in case "I needed an extra money to use for textbooks when the semester started".

*For context... my FAFSA (the form you have to fill to get financial aid in the US) was initially held up and I almost couldn't start classes cause the Dept of Ed's systems flagged my file. Cause my mom's yearly income of $12,000 was deemed "too little to live off of" for her + me + my 2 brothers. And it's like.. yes, my family that year was nearly homeless cause my mother was a DV survivor who just relapsed and we struggled to even pay utilities. Like yes I need financial aid?!

I think the average student loan debt is 38k but I know people who have up to 50k, and if you talk to anyone who did med school, dentistry, or veterinarian school their debt can be up to 100k or more :deadbanana4:

I went to a private university and all we got was full parking lots everyday and a student housing crisis because they over-admit people for more profit. Oh and food wasn't even free either.

Mind you that number is just what I owe on federal loans. After my grants/scholarships, I still had to pay for the rest of the remaining tuition out of my own pocket which I will not disclose for my own sanity.
