Argentina's poverty rate jumps to 53% in first 6 months of Milei's shock therapy

Argentina's poverty rate jumped from almost 42% to 53% during the first six months of Javier Milei' s presidency, the statistics agency reported Thursday, a steep rise reflecting the pain of the country's most intense austerity program in recent memory.

The government's finding that Argentina's half-year poverty rate in 2024 had surged to its highest level since 2003, when the country was reeling from a catastrophic foreign debt default and currency devaluation, marks a setback for the far-right economist. So far, foreign investors and the International Monetary Fund — to which Argentina owes $43 billion — have cheered his controversial fiscal shock therapy that has succeeded in pulling down the country's monthly inflation from 25.5% last December to 4.2% in recent months.

Of the millions who can't clear Argentina's official poverty level of about $950 a month in local currency for a family of four, even more have tumbled into destitution. Thursday's poverty report showed that Argentina's extreme poverty rate had shot up to 18.1% during Milei's first six months as president from 11.9% in the last half of 2023.

I feel bad for the argentinians.
First they have to face the curse of the kitchners (they destroyed that country economy) (defended by a populist cult but we know the truth) and now they elected this guy who looks like chucky and  the economical  experiment is failing?? dont know. I wonder how they will be able to fix their economical
issues.

Latinoamerica is in a really bad shape. Im in Colombia and things are just a disaster here with the last two presidents too. Both disgustin
Everything is falling apart and we are in the brink of a dictatorship like the states too.

I miss the latinoamerica of the 2000s. Things looked miles better for all of us even with awful politicians in power
Extraño cuando nuestros paises no estaban tan mal y al menos se veia que se podian arreglar las cosas. Habia como una luz
Pero ahora todos estan lentamente colapsando.
Now the whole planet looks so bad. Everything is chaos everywhere. Help. I wonder if this is a signal of a future World War III
Me voy a japan o nueva zelanda mejor. Alla todo esta lindo :gaycat4:

It was awful and totally expected. The way many people thought he was leftist but ended up applying the same old neoliberal politics that put Argentina there in the first place. The worst of it all os that he still has supporters encouraging the repression currently he's doing to all the protests from people of all ages

Shock therapy the corrupt politicians who are doing this, not the literally poor working people who are living in the ghost of a once wealthy nation.

Shock therapy barely works (I think Chile is the only country where it ended up well for them) and Argentina has a history of repeated defaults and crises so….I wish Millei good luck
