Oh, Janet. :!ohno:

Janet doesn't give internet or tv junkie at all so I'm not surprised she has no clue what's going on in the world or even the US. :rip: I highly doubt she's voting for Trump though.

I dont understand, if a person is half white half black, why is that person called 'black', shouldnt they just be biracial? If we call them black why cant we call them white :psyduck:

Someone else could probably explain it better than me, but it's an old holdover of the one-drop rule in America. Mixed people with black ancestry are nearly always regarded as just being black. It's why people like Obama and Halle Berry are almost always referred to as just black despite both having a white parent. It's also why Mariah Carey, despite being a blend of multiple ethnicities and appearing racially ambiguous, is never referred to as an Irish or Venezuelan singer, just a black one.

Yup but what was the actual reason behind that rule?

White Americans had this "purity" mentality, and they wanted to protect their finances, so any person (mixed or white) with a drop of black ancestry was considered "black", since whiteness is about "purity" and exclusivity. They were afraid of white people with minor admixture, or mixed people being able to infiltrate in white spaces, so they created this rule, though it's been abolished for about 50 years.

It's why a lot of the "first black" categories and winners for things back in the day went to a mixed person, or.... essentially a white person who was one-dropped out of whiteness.

I agree with you. I'm a huge Janet fan myself but that's still no excuse to be this ignorant, esp. as a Black woman herself. She doesn't live under a rock.

Because most White people would throw a fit if biracials were to identify as just White. I know from first-hand experience because it's happened to me. It just saddens me that there are some Black folks out there who don't want biracials to identify as Black either.

The disclaimer in the article

Quote

(We're speaking a few weeks before the sudden death of her brother Tito.)

So she can't release a statement blaming the fact she's mourning and her words were taken out of context.

She's biracial. I think most people just see her as that?

Which means she can identify as black if she wants or Indian. Because she's both.

Mariah Carey has also not been referred to as black. For example, her generation of MPGs has often claimed to have had two black MPGs in Whitney and Janet (they had Whitney and Janet, we have Rihanna and Beyoncé is an example). So Mariah has been referred to as both.

But Obama and Halle Berry are considered black by the vast majority even though they can identify as white as well.

I love Janet but this is embarrassing. It's shameful how misinformed people are becoming. Also I'm sure she's being fed some conservative rhetoric in her social media algorithms especially since she's in an older demographic.

Allegedly her brother Randy is MAGA supporter. 😐

Janet should not have commented on hearsay, period. Speak if you're informed or give a general answer if you're not.

Misinformation is not a good look. Especially for Janet. The media is going to take this and run with it. The timing of this after her brother's passing is terrible.

she really should stand on business and state things with her whole chest or say she is not informed enough about the subject to respond responsibly.

Mixed race people were identifying as Black before the one drop rule ever went into place. It was not only the source of pride but to prevent division.

I think it's also important to note that Janet Jackson grew up in an era where race politics were significantly different and more obscure than they are today.

I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but there is no excuse for being this ignorant. Especially for an artist who was constantly educating people on race politics in her heyday.
