Maybe a divisive hot take, but I really prefer when Disney's queerness is subtext / implied rather than an overt element of the character / story. Elsa and Luca are not "openly gay" characters, but they and their stories are very easy to interpret as queer for those of us who'd like to see them that way. It's probably better for Disney that way (they avoid riling up right wingers) and I think it results in stronger, more complex characters and films.

Because it's basically impossible to make clunky, on-the-nose, pandering or thematically forced subtext. You can do it amateurishly and fail to write main text that adequately supports the intended subtext, but you can never fail at the 'execution' of subtext - since it occurs inside the heads of the viewers, it will always be the most convincing version they can imagine.

Compare that with explicit dialogue where any number of things can go wrong and render the portrayal insincere/artificial.

Lightyear walked straight into the culture war at its peak with movies. The Little Mermaid and Lightyear's insane racist and homophobic backlash shook them and they used LGBT+ and black people as scapegoats to chase the money. Vile, despicable behavior. All these people care about is $$$$
