Joesuxx Posted September 11 Posted September 11 This album just isn't that good, Texas Hold 'Em was promising, but everything else from the Miley feature to the Jolene cover just felt like someone cosplaying country the easy way. I love Bey, but this is categorically her worst album, I wouldn't be surprised if there are much better examples from the past 12 months across the wider genre. And let's be real if anyone else had released this album the sales wouldn't be so high, it's why she very sensibly kept singles very limited before release. The numbers = noms/awards logic in the op has never been a reality, just look at Lana's countless snubs. 2 2
MattieB Posted September 11 Posted September 11 Imagine stealing the genre from black people and locking them out
swissman Posted September 11 Posted September 11 13 hours ago, Wicked said: She doesn't have to say anything. Talking hasn't done ****. The CMAs is a different conversation from the Grammys, the CMAs will gladly nominate Black artists, they have to make the right music for their committee and fall in line with their reputation. There's white artists they don't nominate (like I mentioned earlier, Zach Bryan, Kacey, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers) and more, that's just not something Beyonce herself can do anything about so that is pointless imo. Shaboozey will probably continue to get noms because of the way he moves through the industry... He was just talking about collabing with Morgan Wallen Which ironically to a degree the way he'll be taken in by country radio and CMAs/ACMs, he might not be by the Grammy Country voters whose taste is more traditionalist and they don't like that particular strain of Country music (see: Morgan being pretty much shut out of grammy country noms along with a lot of "bro country"/Country pop acts through the years) 900 voters doesn't signify much of anything, because like I said, taste in music is volatile and subjective at the end of the day. What can be stated objectively is Black art being mostly celebrated by their Black audiences until dominant society decides to start colonizing things years after the fact. Steps aren't good enough, and this is 5 decades in. You talking about 900 voters after 50 years...? Seriously? Why does she even go? Why? Like I said, The Grio awards exists, as does Black Music Honors. Jay Z can afford to build the most prestigious award for the most wide-ranging group that contributes to American music ever and... Goes on a Grammy stage begging them to "get it right", whatever that means. (Jay Z, by the way, was horrendously skipped over himself in 2002 with The Blueprint not getting an AOTY nom) it's getting to the stage of pathetic. The Grammys don't even be awarding "art" like that, they pretty much award the most palatable on brand music possibly for at least 40 years now. I like Lionel Richie but his album doesn't stand a chance not only against Purple Rain, but against another terrific achievement in 'Born In the U.S.A.' (If that album won AOTY, nobody would've complained), I love Outkast, but Speakerboxxx/The Love Below being their album to win, is similarly funny although unfortunately still historic. And lastly, this is the Grammys lmfao, Grammys ain't even that prestigious in the grand scheme of things. Polaris Music Prize, Mercury Prize, Polar Music Prize >>> the Grammys, which very clearly and obviously is not operating the same way. Too many things rank ahead of artistic merit with the Grammys, unlike the Oscars and Emmys which awarded a "flop" series like Breaking Bad. The US has tried their hand at similar ceremonies, and they ended up tanking. If the most influential people in the American music industry decided to take an actual stab at it they would create meaningful 'change' instead of crying about that show. I think there are a lot of possible solutions, but Jay-Z making his own award is not one of them. Look at all the backlash he is currently getting for simply shortlisting Kendrick Lamar for the Super Bowl. A Jay-Z-created award will not be taken seriously because as we've seen with TIDAL, artists are too concerned with their own ego to ever truly support the work of a fellow artist that is doing something for their own benefit. TIDAL paid (and continues to pay) artists more than any other platform and with a more fair formula of doing so (per stream) and yet some people refused to even participate. Realistically, even if you weren't invited to that signing-event, as an artist you should still want to make TIDAL a success, and yet so many continued with Spotify and Apple Music exclusives. And even within the group that were at the singing-event, all of whom should have been 100% dedicated to making TIDAL a success, including Jay-Z, it was really only Beyoncé who took any meaningful steps to promote the platform, making her landmark album a TIDAL-exclusive for 3 years. Meanwhile, even Jay-Z's 2017 album wasn't a TIDAL-exclusive for more than a week. I don't think an artist can make an award right now, it has to be something/someone more independent.
PopMusicJunkie Posted September 11 Posted September 11 I'm still not over how sublime the album is lyrically, conceptually, and vocally. I don't care what some of y'all say. "Texas Hold 'Em" for sure should have been nominated.
Gladiator Posted September 12 Posted September 12 (edited) Why are there so many people here who have expressed in the past that they don't even listen to country music chiming in, especially to criticize the body of work itself as the reason? Even in some of these posts, comments saying "there's probably much better in the wider genre" or something similar spanning paages? Yes, there have been some excellent country albums this year. Cowboy Carter is one of them. I do understand the criticism that the album is bloated. Although I love the album (no skips for me) and country music is my go-to, but even I sometimes have a hard time going through it as it is intended (which I prefer listening to albums as whole bodies of work). GraceRandolph Posted September 13 Posted September 13 The album was kind of just there. This probably rules out an AOTY win for CC.
DanceAgain Posted September 14 Posted September 14 The album wasn't great & it takes a quick google search to see that there's a abundance of people out there who straight up hated the album and trashed it. It was one of the most high profile album releases this year, it had a massive media push, yet despite her having a global number #1 the album had poor longevity around the word, like Spending 2 weeks at number #1 in Australia and out the top100 after week 7, it charted around 10-13 weeks in most markets, despite her coming off a huge Stadium tour, and Texas holdem been a multi week number #1. I mean Texas spent 5 weeks at number 1 in the UK, yet the album was out the top40 after week 9.. Same story around the world its Beyonce worst performing studio album of her career despite her having one of her biggest Solo hits in years, and Fresh off a stadium tour it didn't have longevity, it was front loaded and did decently for 2-4 weeks before fizzling out. And why do people throw around "it was one of the most critical acclaimed albums of the year" etc etc.. doesn't mean ****, Beyonce's a critics darling regardless, a acclaimed album is irrelevant to the general public, they rather like the music or they don't doesn't matter how much its praised. Also she was snubbed because the voters didn't think it was worthy of any nominations that's the bottom line, just because she's Beyonce doesn't automatically give her a pass to a guaranteed nomination. Beyonce jumping genres kinda backfired aswell, after Jayz spoke out last year at the Grammys about Beyonce "never winning AOTY despite been the most awarded person in Grammy history" and then Beyonce going country straight after a dance album, people saw it as some desperate attempt at trying everything to get that AOTY and people just saw this country music thing she's done as cheesy, inauthentic and didnt buy into it, and you can try and downplay it or pretend that there isn't a **** load of people out there and online that absolutely hated this album and straight up thought it was a **** album, cheesy & boring. Then texas Holden going viral (people doing clips pretending to be dead but sit up and switch the song off as it comes on) Her album cover was widely dragged to people thought it was so ******* cheesy The fact of the matter is, the Album was a underperformance, considering the machine behind it and the media push, it was kinda front loaded, opened with massive streams, broke records etc but quickly fizzled out. This album isn't AOTY worthy either not even close, its a cheese fest, full of filler and drags on. 1
Fleahive Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Every other day a journalist asks someone their thoughts on CMA shut out. I wish they'd stop trying to bait the situation and get her dragged. Do people even take the time to look at the nominations? Yes Post was nominated 4 times but all 4 are for the same song with Morgan Wallen who is a country darling. With that said annoying users like one above trying to use longevity of the album as an excuse as if the nominees this year all had longevity. Kasey flew off the charts. Post surprisingly flopped. None of these people dominated the charts besides Morgan Wallen. The album was very well received and people trying to rewrite history to try to make it seem like the album sucked is so predictable. This was a very competitive year, Beyoncé thinks she's above promotion, and Texas was pulled from radio BY Beyoncé's label which was the start of the floppage. If you want to talk about success Texas was huge the first quarter of the year and that alone would deserve a nomination over every song of the year. That is a country pop song and there's no denying that it wasn't included because the artist was Beyoncé.
