Her vocal cords were damaged during lung cancer surgery. Her voice was thought to be permanently altered, forever sounding like Minnie Mouse. 
 

But she got an implant in her vocal cords and now her iconic voice is back!

Surgery like this always comes with a risk the patient is made aware of beforehand. She surely also signed an acknowledgement of risks it brings.

Glad her voice is back. I've seen her in Dublin at her Laugh Your Head Off tour and wish she did more international dates but sadly she won't... she only did that tour because of being banned in the states. Hope she does another stand up special.
