DAKAR, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Hundreds were killed in north-central Burkina Faso on Saturday after suspected jihadists opened fire on them as they were digging trenches around a town to protect it from attacks, victims' relatives and a source who spoke to wounded survivors said.

The attack outside the town of Barsalogho is one of the deadliest since groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State moved into Burkina Faso from neighbouring Mali almost a decade ago, plunging the Sahel nation into a security crisis that contributed to two coups in 2022.

Hundreds of wounded people were evacuated to healthcare facilities in the city of Kaya, around 40 kilometres (25 miles)south, where a source who did not wish to be named for fear of retribution said the death toll from the attack was likely higher than 500.

According to news reports it was the latest terror attack by the Al Qaeda-linked militant group known as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) in the north of the West African country which has captured large areas of territory in recent years.

What a tragedy, my God. Killing innocent people because they reject your idiotic and barbaric shariah practices. I hope all of these terrorists died as well and go straight to hell. 500 killed people is such an insane loss 💔

What a tragedy. We would be so much better off as a species if we ditched religion.

Y'all say this yet it never actually happens, all while OP routinely only actually posts about Islamic extremist while defending Jewish extremism. Of course some people are going to feel some type of way and be uncomfortable when the same user is both claiming to care about religious extremism while then defending Israel mass-slaughtering thousands in the name of religious texts and claims of ethnic supremacy.

Them just today defending Israeli soldiers launching a military strike in the West Bank:

Here's them trying to deny that polio was spreading in Gaza as a result of the Israeli apartheid state destroying water reservoirs and blocking aid, only for updates to show the first official cases are now confirmed, resulting in a 10-month-old baby becoming paralyzed:

This of course is not to be off topic, since.. do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all that came before you.

When threads about Islamic terrorism are consistently posted (by the same sect of users) and where harsh condemnations that reject nuance or discussions about context result in a tone where posts boil down to racializing entire ethnicities of people as *inherently barbaric*...

...while then many of the same users then argue that what is quite literally Jewish barbarism Is inherently defensible or that the victims of Jewish barbarism somehow had it coming for a million of reasons ("Hamas!!". "Is there pride in Gaza??", "Human shields!", "Israel has a right to defend itself!").

You can tell who secretly has very far-right sympathies when users have a chip on their shoulder and feel as though a gay pop forum of all places is somehow too "apologetic" to *re-reads* Islamic extremism and somehow they're being denied the right to TRULY say what they should be entitled to say apparently not just about Islam but anyone who practices it throughout the entire world.

Not every thread about Islamic extremism has to become a discussion of contextializing Western imperialism and geopolitical history, sure. Let's just mourn the victims and recognize what is a tragedy. But by the same token, not every thread about Islamic extremism needs to become a discussion essentializing Islam and its followers while devolving into highly reactionary discourse about migration into Europe and yet...

The "rightful condemnation" in question:

You (plural) can't ask for mass deportations of European muslims and expect no push back from other members. :dies:

Girl there has been a lot of rhetoric about deporting immigrants in the US and that hasn't lead to a terror attack killing 500 people…

Lives of Africans don't matter as much as white Europeans to western press.

also could have something to do with the fact that Burkina Faso and Mali both experienced recent regime change that resulted in anti-western govs (who also happened to kick out remaining vestiges of French colonialism/French military from their bases they *still* had in these countries). These rightwing jihadists are creating Instability in these regions

Push back from ATRLers, not terrorist organizations.

the situation in west african countries regarding those terrorist attacks is really bad and they are not even on war there. if a war ever explodes those islamists will eclipse the ones in Syria and Iraq.

Horrendous. Surely the world could do more about these West African Islamist insurgencies, they've been going on for nigh on a decade at this point

Massacre in Burkina Faso left 600 dead, double previous estimates, according to French security assessment

Up to 600 people were shot dead in a matter of hours by al Qaeda-linked militants in an August attack on a town in Burkina Faso, according to a French government security assessment that nearly doubles the death toll cited in earlier reports. The new figure would make the assault, in which civilians were shot dead as they dug trenches to defend the remote town of Barsalogho, one of the deadliest single attacks in Africa in recent decades.

Absolutely horrifying. The description of what happened alone is insane. Crazy how the French and the Russians have been deployed to the country and the violence is just getting worse

Agreed! Killing 600 people is awful and a horrifying act of terror.

In reflection, I think that means you agree that Israel is 70x times more awful, since they killed 42,000 people in Gaza, which is 70 times the size of this particular act of terror.

Thanks, @Bosque, for bringing attention to terror events that unfold in the global south, of which Israel is consistently spearheading as the #1 master of terror.
