You're soooo close to grasping the point

If you can't enjoy and support an artist without forming a parasocial relationship with them (and furthermore, feeling enticed to stalk and touch them) then sis… :rip:

i think you're the one not understanding the point lmao

being signed to a major label, appearing on every tv shows and award shows to promote yourself, doing podcasts and constantly selling your image IS capitalizing off parasocial relationships. this is the very definition of it. you appear on tv or other medias and form a relationship with the viewers despite not knowing each others. and she uses it to sell her music. she CHOSE to capitalize off it

like it was said multiple time in this thread, you can be a musician and not capitalize on parasocial relationships. people mentioned other artists here but frank ocean comes to my mind as well. he has songs with billions of streams but you never see that man. he never shows himself on tv anymore, never (or very rarely) posts on social medias, his fans don't even know where he is most of the time. he has a cult following yet he is living a normal life because he chose to not engage in that system the way chappell is

i understand her a bit more after her multiple rants, but you can't complain about parasocial relationships and then two weeks later appear at the VMAS, a show which is based on fans engagement and obsession. this is psychology and human behavior and the major label chappell willingly chose to sign to knows it and capitalize off it. she could be an independent artist and do her own thing but she chose to be a part of that industry which is known to make money off people's obsession

what @Thesedays said is entirely true and that doesn't mean he's talking about himself either. it's just how the industry works and you're delusional if you think it's not

Dont even want a bodyguard? :lakitu:Girl signed with Atlantic and has Dan Nigro as main producer, sold the soul to be a mpg. Ofc she doesn't have to accept harassment, but can't go back and pretend she is anon :ace:

She worked with Dan Nigro on "Pink Pony Club" released in April 2020. I'm not sure how anyone can say she was selling her soul to work with Dan in 2020, when he was pretty much unknown on this site, unless you were listening to other indie/alternative artists like Caroline Polachek.

The only reason anyone will spend a fortune on concert tickets, spend their money buying stuff from someone who doesn't even know they exist and get happy at their achievments is due to PARASSOCIAL BEHAVIOR.

Maybe for mediocre live performers like Taylor, who offer nothing substantial on stage, but that is not the case for great performers like Beyonce and others.

If the main reason you're willing to spend a significant amount of money to see someone as a small dot on a stage is because you have an unhealthy parasocial relationship with them, then you need to re evaluate your choices. Most rational people pay for the talent.

MmmmhM some people just don't have the skin thick enough for the music industry.. they sure want to enjoy the perks of making millions but don't really digest the prons and cons.

I don't think promoting yourself as an artist means fostering a parasocial relationship with fans. There are artists who have done that (Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift) but I don't think Chappell has. Unless you count being open about her queerness inviting a certain subset of extra clingy fans which is not fair to her really.

She's ruining her career

Posted (edited)

I can't believe this is 23 pages long.

it boils down to a simple binary. When you approach someone for whatever and they say no. That should be the end of it.

It doesn't matter:

if she's signed to biggest conglomerate in the world

if you think you're paying her bills

If you think you're her biggest fan in the world

if she performs at the grammys, oscars and superbowl in the same weekend

if you're starstruck, freaking out or any accountability-evading euphemism

if she appears on every primetime show across the country promoting her music, brand, image, whatever you wanna call it

if you think she's too weak for fame

If you think she signed up for this

if you think it comes with the territory

if you think she should treat her fans differently

If you think she's negative, ungrateful, entitled

if you think she's harming her career

if you think she's overreacting

No means No!

No one's justified in invading someone else's personal space. Your armchair scrutiny on forums like atrl is the extent of it.

i sometimes feel like im the only 'normal' fan of artists. i dont follow them, dont scream for them. just enjoy their music and sometimes who they are as a person. i feel like people have started to expect a lot from celebs since like the 90s...... its not normal to me. that said, chappell could have done with only 1 video, and not keeping posting about it. that people get mad, just shows how fake people are and insecure. thats why i dont like this whole becoming famous thing ugh
