It has only just started gaining momentum, has excellent word-of-mouth promo, but for some reason studios are no longer willing to allow a movie to grow gradually, they just push it to VOD if it doesn't make a profit in two weeks. I've been waiting to see this but I also hate this about the industry right now. I think it has more to do with the fact that there are no longer rentals/DVDs so studios who maybe didn't make much money on movies in the theaters could end up making even more in rentals/DVDs over the years. Since that's gone they don't have any backups and just pull these movies out and throw them on streaming for a quick paycheck. Streaming residuals also heavily benefit studios whereas actors/crew get the short end of the stick. That said I've heard such good word-of-mouth for this so I really don't get the pull from theaters right now especially this month Studios have no patience or faith in projects anymore, they just want quick cash. Uncatena Posted October 10 Author Posted October 10 this being in theatres for another two weeks is perfectly fine, it won't make much money after that or rather, more from streaming. riding the hype wave to a VOD date is a smart decision on Mubi's part and the film already has a cult following. 1 1

For this, I think it's a good thing. It won't be making this much in 3 more weekends and digital will give it a much further reach. Unfortunately the number of adults who go to cinemas to see films are lower than ever. 1
Babydoll. Posted October 10 Posted October 10 soooooooo good wtf!!!! very pleased i went to the cinema to see this and yes. im taking The Substance xx 4
ainadalkaz Posted October 10 Posted October 10 feels like i've been waiting forever, the local indie cinema (the only cinema that is showing it here) has been postponing it since early september, but today is finally the day!!! i'm seeing it in a few hours 2
Lil' Oz Posted October 10 Posted October 10 I watched it yesterday and… the last act… Wow. A lot to process, I couldn't speak for an hour I would def recommend. The messages and social commentary especially was AMAZING. Ageism and unrealistic beauty standards are eating us up as a society and we are not even aware of it. 3
ainadalkaz Posted October 11 Posted October 11 i actually don't remember the last time a movie gagged me this much. i saw people saying that it goes off the rails during the last 30-ish minutes, but i... wasn't expecting all that i couldn't stop laughing movie of the year for me, easily 2
shark_heather Posted October 12 Posted October 12 Wow i watched it last night and im still in shock What a movie ! Probably one of the best movies I've ever watched , but its not for everyone Last scene i see its criticized but i love it Spoiler It reminded me of Carrie meets Johnny Depp on nightmare on elm street and I LOVED IT 10/10 from the 1st minute to the last , i wish it was more successful commercially 1

The official quote was that they were "worried about the prospect of releasing the film."

And more and more people are gonna see this film as time goes on, it's gonna be a horror classic just like The Fly.
Club classic Posted October 12 Posted October 12 somebody fainted and pissed himself during the first gory scene when I watched it this week 1 3
Lorelei Posted October 12 Posted October 12 I really don't understand how people clock out in the third act. There's a concept of literally birthing a younger version of yourself from your spine but people draw the line at the third act? In a body horror film filled with gruesome scenes and blood? 6 1
xokuba Posted October 13 Posted October 13 It finally premiered in my country and I was able to attend. Loved the movie, loved the cinematography, the score is excellent! However I'm not happy with the ending, it usually sucks with these types of movies. This felt very over the top but still slayed!

I came out in such a state of shock that I was rambling about it to a friend, while also not having the words to describe what my mind was trying to process. Such an insane movie. In a great way. 4
blaggot Posted October 13 Posted October 13 watched it again last night and the theater was packed! they're doing a disservice by not extending the theater run before the VOD release, I swear it was even better the second time but I'll never forget how I felt after that first viewing

Elementary Posted October 14 Posted October 14 I might be in the minority but I feel like the last 20min of the movie could've been left out. There's a bit more of character development they could have used that time for instead of… that.
